Just because card

First things first, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in the US!

I decided to participate in the challenge at A Blog Named Hero to use one of your old cards to inspire you to make a new one, with a different style.

I wanted to create a card with a detailed fall scene in the foreground and a swirl of fall colors in the background. So I clear embossed the background stamp on white cardstock and then swirled distress inks in fall colors over it. I colored and cut out the little scene with the kitty beside the house to imitate my brother’s home and furkid, and I will send this little “just because” card to them!

Here is the card I made back in April that I used for inspiration on my new one. As you can see, I used the same background stamp for a similar embossed resist look on my new card, but the two results are quite different!

I wanted to let the background on this card get most of the focus, so I kept the other elements understated.

Product/technique notes:
All the stamps are by Hero Arts; I colored the detail images with Copic markers; and I did the embossed resist technique in the background with Tim Holtz distress inks.

Flowers mean I love you

Today my mom is flying back from a 10-day pilgrimage to the Holy Land. This is a trip she has always dreamed of taking, so when she found out that one of her favorite priests in town was going to lead a small group of people there, she didn’t even really have to think about it. She made her reservation and packed her bags.

This means that she just spent 10 days visiting those significant places all Christian children learn about: Nazareth, Cana, the Sea of Galilee, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, the Mount of Olives, Gethsemane…you get the idea. Yeah, this was a BIG trip.

Now, I’d like to be at the airport to welcome her home with a fistful of hand-cut flowers. But because I live 2000+ miles away I made her a card with hand-cut flowers instead! I can’t wait to hear all the stories, Mom!

I am also entering this card in this month’s Young Crafters Unite challenge to make a card/project using a flower or a floral image.

Sending warm fuzzies

I wanted to let the background on this card get most of the focus, so I kept the other elements understated.

I made this Easter card for my mom with two challenges in mind (Young Crafters Unite called for stitching, and A Blog Named Hero for using Hero Arts stamps):

I stamped the background with watermark ink and clear embossed it. Then I applied four colors of distress ink to make the background design pop. I pierced all the center dots before doing a cross stitch with brown floss to cover the whole thing. Honestly, this took a good bit of time to stitch, so after all that work I didn’t want to take much of the focus off that background. So I cut a little bunny with my Silhouette, covered his cotton tail with Stickles and stamped my sentiment on a banner. And a card is born!

I’m bananas about you!

Yesterday I posted a layout I completed about Matt participating in the Austin Gorilla Run in January. While making that page I thought I would use more banana embellishments than I did, so I had a few extras scattered around on my craft desk. In a bold move I decided to challenge myself to use at least one of those bananas in a Valentine’s Day card for Matt. (I really hate to waste things I’ve cut on my Silhouette.)

The answer to my card conunudrum came in the form of another primate. I pulled out an old set of clear stamps with monkeys and palm trees and my Copic markers and created the least Valentiney Valentine’s card ever!

I also wanted to participate in this month’s Young Crafters Unite challenge, so I followed their sketch in making my card and I’m entering it in the challenge.

For reasons unexplained she loved the monkey man. Happy Valentine’s Day, Love!

I made this to be Matt's Valentine's Day card, even though the colors are a bit non-traditional for this holiday.

Scrapatriskaidekaphobia

I have never bought into friggatriskaidekaphobia, the fear of Friday the 13th. But for about two months now I believe I’ve been suffering from scrapatriskaidekaphobia!

Back in October I was on fire with my crafting. I was inspired and driven to be creative and then to blog about it. I blogged every day during October. Then in November I decided to give myself a little well-earned break. I slowed down my output (both crafting and blogging) a little. And then the holidays hit, and I did even less. I was involved in all the lovely Christmas activities that fill our free time in December and didn’t make much time for scrapping.

The thing is that in December I missed scrapping, but I didn’t fret about not doing it because I love Christmas time and all the extra to-do items that take the place of regular life. I knew I could get right back to it after enjoying the holidays. But after celebrating Christmas and the new year, my desire to scrap didn’t return. I hadn’t been in a scrapbook store since before Thanksgiving, and I had no interest in going into one. I looked at the door of my craft room with dread. I was starting to fear that it wouldn’t come back!

My poor blog sat neglected, and I was crestfallen about losing my mojo. I couldn’t seem to do anything about it, either. I tried going to my usual sources of inspiration…but nothing.

But today, on a day that many believe is so unlucky, I had a breakthrough! It was my brother’s doing, actually. It’s his birthday on Sunday, and even though his card is going to arrive late, I couldn’t let Phil celebrate his birthday without a homemade card from me. I just couldn’t. So I forced myself to go into my craft room, and I made this card. I’ve gotta tell you, it felt good!

I have created this card for my brother's birthday and am entering it into the Young Crafters Unite clean & simple challenge.

And here’s a close-up shot to better show the holographic paper I put behind the star cut-out.

I used some holographic paper that I've had in my stash forever. I thought tucking it behind the star cut-out would really make it pop,
