Layouts using 3x4 journaling cards

Fall is in the air

October 1, 2020 By Janice Daquila-Pardo Leave a Comment

The story

Autumns in central Texas are quite different from those we had in northeast Ohio. The temperatures dip less. The change of leaves is more muted. The smell of decay is softer. But it’s all there, nonetheless, signaling the time to hunker down is coming. (This photo was taken in fall 2019 in our back yard.)

Product/technique notes

I created this page for the sketch challenge during the Victoria Marie September online crop. I would normally share the sketch I used, but because this was a paid event I don’t believe I should. I used products from the Little Yellow Bicycle Acorn Hollow collection and stamped the labels that hold my journaling.

Poison Ivan

Poison Ivan by Janice Daquila-Pardo

The story

Because I am over-the-top allergic to poison ivy, Matt always points it out to me when we’re near it and makes sure I don’t get close. But we like to have a somewhat wild back yard because it attracts more animal life, so we tend to also get an occasional overgrowth of the stuff.

Last July we had a lot of poison ivy in our back yard. A lot. Matt decided it was time to pull it all up, so he went to the hardware store and bought this painter’s onesie—with hood and shoe covers—to protect himself for the task.

I love this dork.

Product/technique notes

I created this page for the 5 Ingredients Challenge during the Victoria Marie August online crop, which called for using patterned paper, chipboard stickers/die cuts, fibers (I used twine), textured element (I used a cork arrow), and frames or pockets. I used products from the Echo Park Jungle Safari collection.

I also followed this PageMaps sketch:

March 15 2018 Stuck?! Sketches

The story

Our mom is a K-8 teacher, so growing up we always had lots of school and art supplies at the ready for a crafty session or a school project.

What I love about this October 1973 photo she took of us painting is 1) how focused we are on our projects (very serious faces), and 2) all the little details I remember so well about our basement that we spent so much time in. In the front left corner is a blackboard that we wrote on constantly. In fact, I often kept it filled with the newest menu items at my make-believe restaurant. In the back left is the desk where I remember Daddy writing checks and doing other adult tasks. The dress hanging from the ceiling is one of many that Mom lovingly sewed for me over the years. The chest of drawers that you can seen beyond me was where Mom kept all her fabrics, patterns, and sewing notions. The white brick chimney framing the right side of the photo is where they used to shovel in the coal to heat the house (when it was newly built—not when we lived there!).

Product/technique notes

I used products from Echo Park’s I’d Rather Be Crafting collection, DCWV’s Spring Bloom stack, Crate Paper’s Craft Market collection, and The Paper Studio. That camera flair is old American Crafts.

We belong together forever & always!

Today Stuck?! Sketches launches our second challenge of February. Grab the sketch and play along for prizes from Cuts2Luv and Lawn Fawn.

February 15 2018 - Stuck?! Sketches

The story

Matt and I married on October 4th, and in 2014 our friends Mary and Chuck married on that same date. So we celebrated our 17th anniversary at a wedding! Matt doesn’t dress up often, so I love this photo of him next to me in his dressy duds.

Product/technique notes

I used products from Carta Bella’s Flora No. 1 collection, My Mind’s Eye, and Pink Paislee. I also turned the sketch on its side to accommodate my vertical photo.

Hello GR8

September 30, 2017 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

Hello GR8

The story

Phil and I went to grade school from first through eighth grade at Immaculate Conception School in Willoughby, Ohio. Although we wore uniforms throughout the rest of the year, we were always allowed to dress up for the first day of class. This was our first day of eighth grade. Can you get over how skinny we were?

Product/technique notes

I used patterns from the Shimelle Go Now Go collection. The chipboard is from Crate Paper, and the glitter alphas are Thickers. I based my layout on this sketch from The ScrapRoom:
