Mobile

August 29, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 5 Comments

This 1-photo scrapbook page is entitled "Mobile."

Sometimes I still take a moment to marvel at how we can work from anywhere. I know it’s a part of most of our everyday lives, but I still remember vividly what it was like before the mobile world was born.

I took this photo in August 2012 when I was visiting my family in North Carolina. My brother and I were sitting in a cute coffee shop, and he was taking care of business while we hung out.

Product/technique notes

I followed sketch #111 from My Scraps & More as well as the Scrap & Chat challenge at Paper Issues. This is the sketch:
My Scraps & More sketch #111

And the PI challenge called for choosing one row of four from the table—vertical, horizontal or diagonal—and featuring those four supplies on your project. I used flair, patterned paper, die cuts and enamel dots from this table:
Paper Issues August Scrap & Chat Challenge

I liked the idea of limiting my color palette on this page to that of most of our mobile devices: silver, black and white. So I used a few black-and-white patterned papers from Studio Calico 6×6 pads and then stamped my own patterns for the bottom two rows of diamonds. I wanted the black-to-white ratio in the patterns to go from darkest at the top of the page to lightest at the bottom. The chalkboard flair is from Crate Paper, and I wrote my brother’s initial on it with a chalk marker. The striped enamel dots are from Queen & Co.

Superhero nerds: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

Stuck?! Sketches August 15, 2015 sketch

Matt is a Marvel devotee from way back. He and his brother, Tom, collected comic books when they were boys, but while Matt’s allegiance was to Marvel, Tom loved DC Comics. Each month when the new issues came out they would go down to the hobby store to make their purchase. Even though he loved his collection, Matt tells me that when the price went up to 55 cents a piece it became too rich for his blood and he gave up on it (funny detail).

Now as an adult Matt has shared his love of superheroes with me. We don’t read comic books together, but who needs to with all the comics-based movies that have come out in recent years? And I admit that I love them and look forward to them as much as Matt does, even though I don’t know as much about their origin stories as he does. I just love to root for a hero on his/her journey.

In this photo we are at the Alamo Drafthouse theater in Austin awaiting the start of Ant-Man on its opening day, July 17th.

Product/technique notes

I used some older Bella Blvd (Mr.Boy) and BasicGrey papers and designed and cut the burst shapes and title on my Silhouette.

The boys of summer

August 12, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 1 Comment

The boys of summer is a scrapbook page made with Echo Park's Walking on Sunshine collection.

My brother and I started college at the same time and lived in freshmen dorms that were situated next to each other, so we had a lot of friends in common. Rich lived in Phil’s dorm, and we both quickly became friends with him because he was smart, loyal and lots of fun.

As we were wrapping up our first year and packing to go home for the summer Phil invited Rich to come up to Willoughby for a visit; this photo is from that July 1986 visit.

Product/technique notes

I followed this Boys Rule sketch and used products from the Echo Park Walking on Sunshine collection for this page. I had a lot of fun with the hand stitching on this one, too.

Stuck?! Sketches August 1 2015 sketch

This circa 1977 photo is of my husband and his family stopping for a rest while on a hike on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina. Matt is the cutie on the left leaning on the tree (with attitude).

Product/technique notes

I used patterned papers from LYB “Fern & Forest,” My Little Shoebox “Green,” Pebbles “Lakeside” and We R Memory Keepers “Happy Campers” collections. The chipboard pieces are from Crate Paper “The Pier” and “Story Teller.” Then I designed and cut the title on my Silhouette.

In training

July 31, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 4 Comments

This scrapbook layout uses two photos and products from Pink Paislee's "Switchboard" line.

I figure if my mom thought taking pictures of us while potty training would be cute, then my layout using those photos would by default also be cute! 😉

I hope no one is grossed out by the idea, but I actually think these photos are pretty darling. I am putting my potty time to good use by applying imaginary cream to my legs (1968), and Phil is—of course—reading a magazine (1970).

Product/technique notes

I was inspired twofold on this project. I used the sketch below from My Scraps & More. And I used elements from Paper Issue’s mood board right below the sketch (the circles; the all caps lettering; and the citrus slices, which inspired my twine pie chart effect)!

Paper Issues July 31 2015 mood board

Most of the products I used are from Pink Paislee’s “Switchboard” 6×6 paper pad with some chipboard from Crate Paper. I cut the title on my Silhouette.
