Here is what I created using this great new sketch:

Being born on Thanksgiving means my birthday falls on the holiday every so often!

The whole point of my layout is to express how much I have always loved that my birthday falls on or near Thanksgiving Day. I was born on Thanksgiving, which means that every several years it cycles back around and lands on the holiday again (like this year). But the wonderful thing is that because of its proximity to the holiday, even when it isn’t on the day there’s always a fun, relaxed, family, thankful feeling in the air. I just love it! And it’s one of the things I’m always thankful for on Thanksgiving. 🙂

These photos are from two different years in my little life, but they both show the relationship between my birthday and Thanksgiving. The first photo is my 2nd birthday cake, flanked by seasonal Pilgrim and turkey candles. The second shot is from 1969 and shows me, flanked by two of my cousins, Dick and Tom (both turkeys in their own right!). Their family has come from Pennsylvania to spend Thanksgiving with us, and we’re all having dinner in our basement. They seem to have been quite gracious about sharing the little kids’ table with me. 🙂

Because the twist on the sketch this week was “ribbon,” I decided to create a little turkey with ribbon tail feathers. He seems pretty happy with himself!

This year, as I celebrate Thanksgiving and my birthday, I will add my blog readers to my gratitude list. Happy Thanksgiving!

I really rocked this look

Yeah, I was a fashion plate back in the day. Don’t be jealous of my pin curls and Winnie-the-Pooh blouse. We’re just not all meant to look this good. 😉

My layout below is based on the sketch provided for blog challenge #29 over at My Mind’s Eye. All the products, except the cardstock, are by My Mind’s Eye.

CowParade

Sketchabilities has revealed its latest sketch, #59, and it’s a great one! Be sure to head over to the site to grab the sketch, then create something and link it up! 🙂

Here’s my Design Team layout inspired by the sketch.

Artist-decorated cows were displayed all around the streets of Austin.

CowParade is the largest and most recognized public art event in the world. These exhibits, held in 75 cities in 30 countries to date, have produced more than 5,000 cow canvases by local artists. The exhibits have been viewed by upwards of a half billion people.

And from July through October CowParade came to Austin!

CowParade Austin included 74 sculptures. Matt and I wanted to be sure to partake of this public art display, so we took a few hours one Saturday in October to see as many of them as we could. We walked up and down Congress Avenue and photographed these big bovine beauties. There were many that we didn’t get to see in person, but the ones we did see were beautiful and clever!

Just this weekend the sculptures were auctioned, raising $1.49 million for The Superhero Kids Endowment at the Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas!

The one with no turkey

This has been two-page layout week on Sketch Support, and today my layout is live! Please head over to grab the sketch so you can use it in your own crafting, and while you’re there I would love it if you would leave a quick comment for me. 🙂

Here is a look at the layout I made.

This layout is based on a sketch from www.sketchsupport.com.

I loved this sketch and followed it quite closely. The only changes I made were to use a wider variety of patterned papers in the strips that form the background and to add a hand-crocheted edge at the bottom (for a cozy “sweater-weather” feel).

The journaling reads, “We had started a special diet in October and were doing well on it, so we agreed to forgo the traditional Thanksgiving dinner for a long walk around Town Lake. Although we missed the turkey and fixins, we spent a really lovely day together being thankful and healthy! 11-26-2009”

Here’s a closer look at a few of the details.

I punched evenly spaced holes along the bottom edge of the background and used cream crochet thread to add a simple border.

Here is what I created using this great new sketch:

Photos of Mom's 2006 Thanksgiving visit show how much we resemble each other!

I chose to use four 4×3-inch photos rather than the two 4x6s that the sketch called for because I liked how these shots really highlighted how much we resemble one another! Over the years people have mentioned the similarity, but I usually don’t see it as well as I do in these photos.

It was 2006 and Mom had come from North Carolina to spend Thanksgiving and my birthday with us. On this day we took a little drive to nearby Frederickburg, where you can get a good dose of German heritage and antiques shopping. So we spent a lovely day window shopping. 🙂

Because of the chipboard twist on this sketch, I decided it was time to pull out my never-used Tim Holtz distress crackle paint to antique it a bit. It was fun! After the paint dried into small cracks, I rubbed Tim Holtz distress inks (in iced spruce, evergreen bough and crushed olive) into the cracks to highlight them. Here’s a closeup of the result. I will certainly be using this technique again!

One crackle paint and three distress inks later, here is my result.
