Knott’s Berry Farm 1976

July 19, 2013 By Janice Daquila-Pardo Leave a Comment

Knott's_Daquila-Pardo

I remembered there being jelly for sale at Knott's Berry Farm, so I created the boysenberry jelly jar accent to tuck in behind the left photo.

When I was nine and my brother eight, our family flew from Ohio to California to visit my maternal grandparents. I remember that we flew there on July 4th, 1976, so we all wore red-white-and-blue outfits (carefully picked out by Mom, who should have been a scrapbooker but isn’t!).

I think we stayed for almost a month, and I have several little moments stored in my memory from that time with our grandparents. One of the days I remember is when we visited Knott’s Berry Farm, where we had these photos taken. I thought I’d provide them in a little larger format here because they really are special photos, and they’re a bit hard to see well on the layout.

The first is of my grandparents with me and Phil in the gold mine, and the second is of me and Phil and Daddy on a ride.

As I was creating this page, I seemed to remember that Knott’s Berry Farm sold jelly when we were there and that it was kind of a big deal to the theme of the park. So I did a little rooting around on their web site and found out this interesting tidbit:
“It was not until the 1930s that Walter became associated with the “boysenberry” which would became the family trademark. Nearby, Anaheim Parks Superintendent Rudolph Boysen had experimented with a new strain of berry but the plants kept dying on the vine. Walter took the scraggly plants, nurtured them to health and named the new berry – a cross between a loganberry, red raspberry and blackberry – after its originator. Today, all boysenberries in the world can trace their roots to Knott’s Berry Farm.”

So I created a little jelly jar with a boysenberry to tuck in behind one of the photos. And this little detail on my page makes be ridiculously happy!

Baby I love your way

July 14, 2013 By Janice Daquila-Pardo Leave a Comment

Cruise2005_Daquila-Pardo

These lyrics from the Peter Frampton song, Baby I love your way, made me think of this little private island we saw on our cruise to the Caribbean in 2005.

The sixth sketch challenge has been posted at the new SCRAP & MUSIC challenge blog! Head over to the site to grab the sketch and play along. This sixth sketch came with the song “Baby I love your way” by Peter Frampton.

Scrap & Music sketch #6

My layout

I had to read the lyrics of this song several times before feeling a connection to any photos I have. Then it hit me: there was a little private island that we saw somewhere off the coast of Belize on the Caribbean cruise we took in 2005. I can remember us saying how much we would love to buy it. BINGO! And so I pulled out three of the hundreds of photos we took on that trip and strung them together with these lines as my title:
I can see the sunset in your eyes
Brown and gray, blue besides
Clouds are stalking islands in the sun
I wish I could buy one
Out of season

Product/technique notes

The background paper on this layout is from the October Afternoon “Midway” collection, and the other little bits are mostly from their “Seaside” line.

Once I decided that I wanted to use several lines of the lyrics from the chosen song, I knew the best/easiest way to achieve that would be to cut the text out of the background paper (with my Cameo) and back it with cardstock. Then it occurred to me that it would be fun to make each line of the title a different color, so that’s how this ombre effect came into being. I’m really happy with the juxtaposition of the ombre blue title with the oranges and yellows I used around the photos, mimicking the colors of the Caribbean!

The challenge

The challenges on this blog involve following the sketch and using a title on your layout with a line from the provided music. Below I’ve included the video as well as the lyrics for this song:

“Baby I love your way” by Peter Frampton
Shadows grow so long before my eyes
And they’re moving across the page
Suddenly the day turns into night
Far away from the city

Don’t hesitate
‘Cause your love won’t wait

{Chorus}
Ooh baby I love your way (everyday)
Wanna tell you I love your way
Wanna be with you night and day
Moon appears to shine and light the sky
With the help of some firefly
Wonder how they have the power to shine, shine, shine
I can see them under the pine
Don’t hesitate
Cause your love won’t wait

{Chorus}
Well don’t hesitate
‘Cause your love won’t wait
I can see the sunset in your eyes
Brown and gray, blue besides
Clouds are stalking islands in the sun
I wish I could buy one
Out of season
Don’t hesitate
Cause your love won’t wait

Mentor Headlands Beach

July 13, 2013 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 4 Comments

Headlands_Daquila-Pardo

When this photo was taken I was 23, living back at home after finishing college, working full time and dating Hansel.

This layout features a photo of me in June 1990, at the beach with my boyfriend, Hansel. We had just taken a long walk and then plopped down on the sand to watch the sun set.

Mentor Headlands is the beach my bro and I grew up going to, so of course I always took it for granted. But in reading the beach’s website I found this bit of info quite interesting:
“The trademark of Headlands Beach State Park is its mile-long natural sand beach, the largest in the state. In addition to its popularity during the summer season with picnickers and swimmers, the area is home to many plant species typically found only along the Atlantic Coast.”

Product/technique notes

I created this layout based on sketch #7 by Juliana Michaels for The Paper Bakery and am entering it in their sketch challenge. The patterned papers I used were mostly from Simple Stories’ “Summer Fresh” collection, with a bit of October Afternoon and My Mind’s Eye thrown in the mix to make the Polaroid element (which was a free cut file from The Paper Bakery as well).

The song that summer sings

June 30, 2013 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 5 Comments

Oktoberfest1991_Daquila-Pardo

This 1991 photo of my friend and me dancing to the polka music at the Oktoberfest reminds me so well what a good time we had together. Please don't judge me for wearing a fanny pack!

The fifth sketch challenge has been posted at the new SCRAP & MUSIC challenge blog! Head over to the site to grab the sketch and play along. This fifth sketch came with the song “She” by Elvis Costello.

Scrap & Music sketch #5

My layout

I, like many of you probably, have loved this song since first seeing the Julia Roberts/Hugh Grant movie, “Notting Hill.” It has that beautiful melody and conveys so much feeling about destiny and devotion. Once I really combed through the lyrics to find some line that “spoke to me” for a scrapbook page, I was hit by “She may be the song that summer sings.” What a pretty thought!

So I dusted off this 1991 photo of me (the shortie on the right) and my friend, Lisa, dancing together at Oktoberfest. The Willoughby, Ohio, church I grew up in started holding an annual Oktoberfest in July back when I was still in grade school there. That first year they held the festival in October, as is the custom, but it was cold and rainy, and the whole thing fell a little flat. From that point the Oktoberfest committee decided to start planning the events for July, when the weather is more conducive to outdoor partying. It has since become a big success for the church, with tons of food and drink, live music, games and even car raffles! My dad was on the Oktoberfest committee for several years, and my mom, brother and I always signed up to work at the booths throughout the weekend. It was such a good time.

By 1991 I had been out of college for a few years and had a job where I worked with Lisa (in the photo with me). We had become friends, so I invited her to join me for Oktoberfest. We had a good time, if you believe the laughter captured in this photo. So for me, “the songs that summer sings” include the live music at Oktoberfest that I remember most—like polkas and Irish music.

Product/technique notes:

I used patterns from the Echo Park “Here & Now” collection for this layout because their bright, happy colors went just perfectly with my photo.

The challenge

The challenges on this blog involve following the sketch and using a title on your layout with a line from the provided music. Below I’ve included the video as well as the lyrics for this song:

“She” by Elvis Costello
She
May be the face I can’t forget.
A trace of pleasure or regret
May be my treasure or the price I have to pay.
She may be the song that summer sings.
May be the chill that autumn brings.
May be a hundred different things
Within the measure of a day.

She
May be the beauty or the beast.
May be the famine or the feast.
May turn each day into a heaven or a hell.
She may be the mirror of my dreams.
A smile reflected in a stream
She may not be what she may seem
Inside her shell

She who always seems so happy in a crowd.
Whose eyes can be so private and so proud
No one’s allowed to see them when they cry.
She may be the love that cannot hope to last
May come to me from shadows of the past.
That I’ll remember till the day I die

She
May be the reason I survive
The why and wherefore I’m alive
The one I’ll care for through the rough and ready years
Me I’ll take her laughter and her tears
And make them all my souvenirs
For where she goes I’ve got to be
The meaning of my life is

She, she, she

Do something amazing everyday

June 29, 2013 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 6 Comments

RescuingShiner_Daquila-Pardo

The subtitle of this layout should be Rescuing Shiner. We had just identified Shiner's address and were about to take him home to his family.

So, as I’ve blogged about before, Matt and I rescue animals who are in danger. Unfortunately, finding animals that need help is not difficult. There are a lot of reasons that pets wander from home and find themselves in dangerous situations. In the case of this dog, his owners told us that they had just adopted him about two weeks ago, and they didn’t realize what a great jumper he is! In fact, he jumped their fence and crossed a major intersection to get to our neighborhood. It’s a little miracle that he made it.

Matt was out on a run that afternoon, and he had been gone longer than I was expecting, so I was just starting to consider calling to check on him. Just then, he called me and asked me to come running with some dog-catching supplies—kibble, water and a bowl. I should have known that’s why he was out longer than usual! I quickly gathered these items and raced down the street with them, only to find Matt and a small group of neighbors standing around talking, with this dog standing calmly on a pink leash. They had caught him just before I arrived.

We took him home for the night with a plan to begin looking for his owners the next day. We and Shiner were fortunate that his owners had microchipped him! We had him scanned, called the number provided and set up a plan to take him back home to his family.

I’ll be honest, not all our rescues go this smoothly. So in honor of this one that did, I had to celebrate it with a scrapbook page. Plus, those are two cute boys in that photo!

Product/technique notes:

I used patterned papers from the Simple Stories “24/Seven” collection (but the background paper is from Fancy Pants’ new “Memories Captured” line) and the following sketch from Paper Bakery.
