Hello, hello! Today I hope to inspire you with pointers to some great sketches I found online, all of them current and several of them with contests attached. If you want to visit the sites from which they came, just click on the sketch images. Happy scrapping!
Sketches
May the road rise up to meet you…
Sketch #92 on the Twisted Sketches site is available today! The sketch is for one vertical photo, and the twist this time is “brads.” Following is my contribution to the design team layouts that go up for inspiration:
The sketch included a place for a long-ish title, and because this week we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day I thought of using part of an Irish blessing for mine. This is a photo of my baby bro in Central Park when he took a Christmas trip to NYC this past December. I liked the effect of combining this Irish blessing for him with the idea of the road and travel.
To create the patterned paper highlight area behind the photo I cut small strips of travel-themed paper (Wander by BasicGrey) and punched some of them with a postage stamp border punch (Fiskars) and then layered them randomly. The last line of the Irish blessing is written on the ticket to the left of the picture.
I hope the design team’s interpretations of sketch #92 inspire you to use it for one of your photos.
I love furr like Goldmember loves gold!
Sketch #88 is now live at the Twisted Sketches blog. It’s a great sketch, and “soft” is the twist. Here’s my interpretation:
Do you remember the scene in “Austin Powers in Goldmember” (2002) when Goldmember explains his name? You may be interested in reliving it with me:
One day as I was petting one of our cats I looked off into the distance and said in my best Goldmember voice, “I love fuuuuuuuur!” My husband laughed, and the idea for a layout went into my mental scrapbook vault. The “soft” twist on this sketch gave me the perfect opportunity to use the idea. (Plus, did you notice that I used soft felt letters for the word “furr” in the title?)
Why not head over to the Twisted Sketches blog and play along?
Chunky monkey: two-photo layout
Here is another great sketch from PageMaps. I scanned and cleaned up these photos from my childhood so I could enter their contest.
In these photos my beautiful mom was 27 years old; I was under a year old and a chunky monkey. Getting a bath in the kitchen sink; does it get any cuter than that?
By the way, this is a another design that lends itself well to using 6×6 paper pads, as I’ve done here:
Designing 12×12 pages with 6×6 paper
When new collections come out by my favorite scrap companies I am always tempted to buy. But I rarely get the whole collection because no matter how much I like (even love) it, I just can’t imagine wanting to create that many layouts out of the same look. Add to that the fact that collections have become so expensive. So I have been for some time buying the 6×6 paper pads that many companies are issuing. They have long been favored by card makers because of their smaller-sized patterns, and I quite like the lower price tag as well.
So I am always on the hunt for ways to use pieces of patterned paper that are 6×6 or smaller on my 12×12 layouts. When I find good ways to do this I will share them here in case you, like me, have several 6×6 paper pads waiting to make it into your designs.
Below is my first sketch with this in mind. I based it on the design I shared yesterday, which was called “Calendar girl.” If you use this sketch in a design please link to it in the comments. I would love to see what you create with it!
