Who rescued whom?

February 27, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

WhoRescuedWhom_Daquila-Pardo

We rescued our beloved Oliver from a busy highway in 2002. He was a tiny kitten and sorely needed our help. But ever since whisking him out of harm’s way and bringing him home to live with us, we are the ones who have needed him. He has made us more loving people and brought us such great joy. Apparently, Oliver Longfellow Daquila-Pardo, you have rescued us.

Product/technique notes

All the Bo Bunny “Star-Crossed” products I used to create this layout came from the Back Porch Memories February kit (thank you to BPM for allowing me to be a part of their design team through March). I designed the title and cut it with my Silhouette Cameo and hand stitched across the two pages to mimic the stitching and banners on the journaling card.

Note: I’m submitting this to the Paper Issues “Prints Charming Beautiful Papers” link party.

Three candles

January 15, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

ThreeCandles_Daquila-Pardo

There’s just not much that’s cuter than a little birthday boy with his cheeks puffed up to blow out his candles.

Today is my baby brother’s birthday. To celebrate and show Phil that I’m thinking about him I created a layout featuring an adorable photo from his third birthday in 1971. God bless you, my sweet bro. Who could ever ask for better? I love you more.

Product/technique notes

I really liked this sketch from Creative Scrappers (and am quite sad that they are ceasing their sketch contests later this month), so I followed it for this page. The background paper is an older one from Sassafras Lass; the banner is from BasicGrey’s “Hey You;” and the rest of the papers and die cuts are from Crate Paper’s “Party Day” collection. I created the title with a combination of Silhouette shapes and my own lettering.

Lucky 2

November 23, 2014 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

Lucky2_Daquila-Pardo

As November’s guest designer for Back Porch Memories, I was asked to use a sketch from PageMaps to create one of my layouts. These supplies are mostly from Heidi Swapp’s September Skies collection.

It’s no surprise that I’m feeling like documenting some of the things I am grateful for in my life. My friendship with my baby bro certainly qualifies!

We have developed an awful lot in common over our lives together and always find something to keep ourselves entertained. For instance, these photos came about because we both love photography, and so we had a camera along with us at the mall one day this summer. While we waited for Mom to finish up in a store, we held an impromptu portrait session on the overstuffed chairs in the middle of the mall. What can I say? The lighting wasn’t too bad, and we are a couple of hams!

Product/technique notes

Following is the sketch I followed for this page. Most of the supplies are Heidi Swapp “September Skies,” with some Shimelle thrown in for good measure.

Student of the month

October 24, 2014 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 4 Comments

StudentOfTheMonth_Daquila-Pardo

This is a story from first grade that holds great significance for me. And it starts with a special announcement over the loudspeaker from the school principal.

Mom says I arrived home from first grade on this day in 1974, and with a gleeful smile demanded, “Guess who you’re talking to.” She played along and asked. So I flung open my coat to reveal the badge pinned to my dress and proudly stated, “The Student of the Month, that’s who!” I wore that pin to school on my uniform every day that month.

So that was a big day for me. It still is, obviously. I learned early to enjoy doing my work well and that when and if I am complimented for it, it makes me feel spectacular. It doesn’t take much to make a kid feel special…and clearly some words of praise can last a lifetime.

Product/technique notes

I created this layout based on the following sketch from Stuck?! Sketches and am entering it in their October contest. I had such a difficult time finding papers that went well with this vintage photo. I mean, the couch was brown and light blue, the framed art had browns and oranges in it and my dress was either deep navy or purple. Ugh! I finally came upon these papers from quite deep in my stash, an old collection by TPC Studio called “School Days.” I think they’re just perfect. The banner is from BasicGrey, the ribbon is by American Crafts and I designed the title on my Silhouette Cameo.

I also added some crochet stitches along the edge of the circle because the collar of my dress in this photo is crocheted. If you didn’t see it before, here’s a tutorial on how to add crochet to the edge of page elements.

My sample page is all about celebrating this fabulous photo of my dad as a boy. He’s showing off his muscles with his dad by his side. What a gem! I used papers from Echo Park and a banner from BasicGrey.
