If I'm not scrapbooking I'm thinking about scrapbooking!

Basic Grey

Happy happy days

May 27, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 4 Comments

This two-photo scrapbook layout uses products from Basic Grey.

In the summer of 1968 my mom packed up her two babies (both of us under 18 months) and got on a plane to California to be in her brother’s wedding. That’s me and Phil in the arms of L: Mom and Grandpa and R: Grandma and Grandpa.

CUTE!

Product/technique notes

I created this page using patterns and die cuts from Basic Grey’s “Vivienne” collection because it went so well with these vintage photos. I turned this Stuck?! Sketches May sketch on its side and followed it.

The reception

May 25, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 4 Comments

This layout, called The reception, is based on a Stuck?! Sketches May sketch.

My mom’s cousin, Tom, was married in September 1977, and these photos are from his wedding reception. I seem to remember that Phil and I were looking forward to being old enough to really participate in the celebratory atmosphere (because 9- and 10-year olds are such party animals). 😉

I love Phil’s 70s style and my long dress (which Mom sewed). And I particularly remember wanting to touch the ribbons on Aunt Mary Lou’s dress. It’s all quite groovy.

Product/technique notes

I followed this sketch from Stuck?! Sketches and used patterned papers from the Basic Grey “Curio” collection. I created the title on the Silhouette and hand stitched several times around the background circle.

You are awesome

This is a clean and simple one-photo design using the ombre effect.

This is a photo of our sweetheart, Liam, at three months of age. How about that bold stare? He still has those amazing baby blue eyes.

Product/technique notes

I created this layout to participate in a monochromatic/ombre challenge at A Cherry on Top, in which they required the use of only one color (other than black and white) in at least three shades. No other colors (except in your photos) was allowed. That is not as easy as it may sound! I found my papers in 6×6 paper pads by American Crafts, BasicGrey and My Mind’s Eye. I created the title with a free cut file that I offered on my blog a few weeks ago. Here it is again, in case you missed it.

Hello Bradford

In October 1990 I went on a weekend road trip with Mom and Dad through some pretty areas in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and we spent one of the nights in this sweet bed & breakfast in Bradford, PA. This was an amazingly fun trip. We talked and joked over the many miles Dad drove and just soaked up the fall beauty and the time together. There are priceless memories in these photos.

Product/technique notes

All the Crate Paper “Open Book” products I used to create this layout came from the Back Porch Memories February kit (thank you to BPM for allowing me to be a part of their design team through March).

The catbird seat

My brother is a man of many passions. One of his current obsessions is The New Yorker magazine—its articles and history. While Phil visited us for the Christmas/New Year’s holiday, he read aloud to me a good bit of the book pictured here by James Thurber. Thurber was a cartoonist, author, journalist and playwright, best known for his cartoons and short stories that were published in The New Yorker magazine.

Because Phil was so “into” this topic while he was visiting, I asked him to let me take a photo of him reading the book. As soon as he sat down, as if on cue, Flash jumped up to read along with him! When I asked Phil what he thought I ought to title this page, he replied, “How about ‘The catbird seat,’ one of Thurber’s short stories.” Just purrfect!

Product/technique notes

Notice that I overlaid the title stickers in the “empty” space at the bottom of the photo. In this case, it worked quite well because the slope of my brother’s left leg and foot direct the viewer’s eye right to the title. So, the eye rests first on his face and the cat, then slides down the leg to the title and finally roams around the details of the circle grid to figure out how the patterned papers support my story. It helps connect everything.

I used patterned papers from BasicGrey’s “Oxford” and “Out of Print” collections and followed Let’s Capture Our Memories sketch #107.
