Crate Paper

In training

July 31, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 4 Comments

This scrapbook layout uses two photos and products from Pink Paislee's "Switchboard" line.

I figure if my mom thought taking pictures of us while potty training would be cute, then my layout using those photos would by default also be cute! 😉

I hope no one is grossed out by the idea, but I actually think these photos are pretty darling. I am putting my potty time to good use by applying imaginary cream to my legs (1968), and Phil is—of course—reading a magazine (1970).

Product/technique notes

I was inspired twofold on this project. I used the sketch below from My Scraps & More. And I used elements from Paper Issue’s mood board right below the sketch (the circles; the all caps lettering; and the citrus slices, which inspired my twine pie chart effect)!

Most of the products I used are from Pink Paislee’s “Switchboard” 6×6 paper pad with some chipboard from Crate Paper. I cut the title on my Silhouette.

Happiness starts with whiskers and ends with a tail

July 22, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 6 Comments

Happiness starts with whiskers and ends with a tail is a scrapbook layout that features a photo of my cat in his happy pose.

Our cat Tristan is just a hoot. He’s happy and so expressive. This photograph is not the first time I’ve seen him throw himself down in this joyful position. He always does it when he’s in a great mood and has just received lots of love (like here). Or when he’s happily warming himself in front of a heater in the winter.

I swear: just looking at him makes me happy.

Product/technique notes

I was inspired by the following sketch from Let’s Get Sketchy. The products I used are a smattering from Crate Paper “Notes & Things,” Amy Tangerine “Yes, Please” and We R Memory Keepers “Chalkboard.” The flair is from Studio Calico. I designed and cut the title with my Silhouette.

Long Branch Beach

June 25, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo Leave a Comment

This 3-photo scrapbook page features paper from Crate Paper.

Most of my summer vacations as I grew up were sweet and simple and family-centered. They included playing tennis and reading and going to the city pool and on family trips. When I got older they also included part-time jobs so I could save up for college.

But the summer of 1988 was epic for me. And if I may speak for him, it was for my brother as well. That’s because we spent it living and working in New York City at magazines that participated in the American Society for Magazine Editors internship program. What an amazing opportunity to learn about our industry (we were both studying magazine journalism in college) and about ourselves.

I probably have more stories from that one summer than from all my other summers combined! The story told in these photos is one of new friends, warm sunshine and easy laughter. But most importantly for me, it’s a memory full of feelings of belonging.

Susan (on the far left in the left photo) was the older sister of a grade school classmate of ours. We found out that she was living in NYC, and motivated by the desire to have a connection with someone from our past in this vast newness around us, Phil and I called her. Rather than blow us off—which I think a lot of people might have done—Susan, her boyfriend and two of their friends made plans to pick us up on a Saturday morning and drive us out of the city for a day at Long Branch Beach on the Jersey Shore.

We had such a day—so fun and relaxing!

Some people just have a wonderful way about them. They make others feel like old, valued friends right away. And that’s a feeling that stays with you long after the sun goes down.

Product/technique notes

I created this page using patterns from the Crate Paper “The Pier” collection. The title is based on a Silhouette banner cut file to which I added the lettering. The flair is by American Crafts.

Hello Bradford

In October 1990 I went on a weekend road trip with Mom and Dad through some pretty areas in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and we spent one of the nights in this sweet bed & breakfast in Bradford, PA. This was an amazingly fun trip. We talked and joked over the many miles Dad drove and just soaked up the fall beauty and the time together. There are priceless memories in these photos.

Product/technique notes

All the Crate Paper “Open Book” products I used to create this layout came from the Back Porch Memories February kit (thank you to BPM for allowing me to be a part of their design team through March).

That’s how I roll

My brother was born 13.5 months after I was. So I was still “taking walks” by stroller when Grandma traveled from California to Ohio in January 1968 to be with us for his arrival.

Sadly, I don’t remember this moment. 😉

Product/technique notes

I used this nice sketch from Stuck?! Sketches and papers from Crate Paper’s “Close Knit” and “DIY Shop” collections. I designed the title and cut it on the Silhouette Cameo. I also like to add a bit of hand stitching to cozy vintage layouts like this.
