Celtic warrior

I don't think Matt is quite right as a redhead. 😉

For Halloween in 2005 Matt wanted to wear his kilt and be a Celtic warrior, so we pulled together this outfit. After doing a little online research for face tattoo designs, I “tattooed” Matt’s face. It was fun to do! Then we sprayed his hair with this outrageous color of orange to finish the look.

Admittedly, it’s a hodgepodge costume, but it’s fun and looks good on my guy. And he got a great reaction when he wore it to his business meetings that day!

Product/technique notes:
On this layout I used products from Echo Park, Little Yellow Bicycle, My Mind’s Eye, Paper Studio and Pink Paisley. I cut the title on my Silhouette using the Stonecross font.

One fall day

The colors in the Echo Park Fall Fever mini collection were perfect with this photo!

This is just one of those sweet photos Mom or Dad took of Phil and me on a random day in October 1971. I was a month from turning 5, and Phil was a few months from turning 4 years old. We’re posing in the living room of our childhood home in Willoughby, Ohio.

I paired the photo with this Echo Park Fall Fever mini collection because the colors went so perfectly together. The background sheet is from Echo Park’s Take Note collection.

You know I read it in a magazine

These photos were taken at Ohio University in 1989.

Not only did my younger brother, Phil, and I start school in the same year, which led to us travelling through grade school and high school together as though we were twins, but also we elected to go to the same university for the same major! Yessir, we both packed up our things and went to Ohio University for journalism degrees. And once we had been there long enough to figure out which kind of journalism we wanted to specialize in, we both chose the magazine track.

So after studying the principles and ethics of journalism for four years, we were thrilled to have a course in our senior year that ~~allowed~~ forced us to craft our own magazines. Each student had to come up with a concept for a magazine that didn’t already exist, write the business plan for it and then create a prototype of the premiere issue. What a dream project for a couple of magazinophiles.

Phil’s magazine for billiards enthusiasts was called “Blue Chalk.” My magazine for comedians was called “Stand-Up.” We had to mock up articles, ads…the whole magazine experience. It was hard work and exhilarating. But we both felt quite proud of our final projects. In fact, Phil’s book won a contest with a cash award from Writer’s Digest and Folio Magazine!

These photos were taken just after the ceremony where Phil received his award. And the bottom photo is of Phil and our friend, Rich, who was listed in “Blue Chalk” as publisher.

This layout is based on a sketch from http://www.rockpaperscrapbook.blogspot.com.

This layout features a photo that my bro, Phil, took when he was visiting us in January. He and Matt and I decided to spend a little time at Barnes & Noble one afternoon, drinking specialty coffees and perusing whatever books and magazines caught our fancies. I decided to scrap this one because it represents something that Matt and I like to do together to relax. We like to call it “research.” 😉

When creating this page I followed a sketch that I found at Designs by Ashley Rock. Unfortunately, I didn’t learn of this sketch contest until the day it was due, but I still liked the sketch enough to use it here.

My page uses the brand new chevron paper from Echo Park’s new Sunshine mini theme, along with some older products and a doily cut on my Silhouette.

Leap

Twisted Sketches has revealed sketch #141, and the twist is “leap.” Be sure to head over to the site to grab the sketch and see all the other design team members’ beautiful examples. Then create something of your own and link it up!

Here is what I created using this great new sketch:

These are photos of me (and friends) during college that illustrate the quote I used as my title.

I just love using short quotes as titles for layouts, so when I saw that the twist on this sketch was “leap,” I went in search of a good quote I could sink my teeth into. I found several that inspired me, but I chose to use this one by David Herbert Lawrence (English writer, 1885-1930) because it also made me think of some old photos I had.
“Life is a travelling to the edge of knowledge, then a leap taken.”

The photos this quote put me in mind of were from my college days. When else in our lives do we so often travel to the edge of knowledge and have to take a leap into our own unknown? The first photo is of my brother, Phil, me and my mom from freshman year. Mom was visiting us for Mother’s Weekend, and we had loads of fun. The second photo is of me with the three roommates I had during a wonderful summer internship program in New York City (lots of learning and leaping!). And the third photo is of me with some friends at the end of our junior year in college.

These are certainly not good photos; in fact they’re pretty terrible. But really, how many photos of you from the 1980s do you love? What’s important to me is that they represent memorable times of growth in my life and help me remember to travel to the edge as often as possible. The edge is uncomfortable and exciting. Sign me up for that!

So, this is my last layout as a design team member for Twisted Sketches. I have been enjoying the challenge of using Anam’s sketches and twists for a little over a year (you can see my very first DT layout here), and the time has just flown. I want to thank Anam for taking a chance on me. She was the first person to make me part of a design team, which means that she and her sketch site will always hold a special place for me. I thank her for believing in my design skills and adding to my confidence.
