Fork in the road

Sometimes it's the quickest decisions that make us the happiest. Like when I met Matt while working in this building and blurted out an invitation for a date!

Some jobs in life are just a means to a paycheck. But not this one!

I was recently visiting my family in North Carolina, and while we were walking UNC’s campus I asked my bro to take a few photos of me in front of the building in which I used to work. Manning Hall houses, among a few other smaller programs, the School of Information and Library Science. I was the Director of Communication there in 1995-97. It was my first professional position after finishing grad school, so it was quite exciting and important to me when I took it on. I gained a lot of experience and worked with rich, interesting people.

But what ends up being the most notable part of my time there is that it’s where I met Matt.

Matt was a graduate student (same age as me) in the info science program, and he was assigned to work with me on a web project. We hit it off right away, as you might imagine. And after about a week of meetings with him to talk and work on all things web, I did the unthinkable. Without knowing I was going to say it, I asked him out!

I’m not going to lie; there were bumps in the road to our dating. Like the fact that Matt had a girlfriend whom he hadn’t mentioned. Gulp. But the short version of the story is that everything worked out nicely. He broke things off with the girlfriend, we dated, he proposed (no, I didn’t have to do that!) and we married. And have been married for 16 years this month.

So Manning Hall holds a special place on my résumé and in my heart!

Product/technique notes

I used papers from the new Fancy Pants “Happy-go-lucky!” collection. Just look how well they go with my photos! I stamped the heart at the top and the leaves that serve as embellishment at the bottom. And I designed the title in Silhouette Studio and cut it with the Cameo.

We’ll be together again

In this 10-year-old photo, Daddy and I are saying our goodbyes before heading to the Austin airport for him to return home. We had a wonderful time when he came to visit that spring.

The 12th sketch challenge has been posted at the SCRAP & MUSIC challenge blog! Head over to the site to grab the sketch and play along. This 12th sketch came with the song “Stop!” by Erasure.

Scrap & Music sketch #12

My layout

Today would have been my father’s 80th birthday, so I decided to celebrate with a page about us. The photo on my layout is of Daddy and me in 2003, when he came to Austin from NC to stay for the week. He and Matt and I had such a great visit. We took this pic together in the back yard right before heading to the airport for Dad to return home. I used the challenge song’s first line, “We’ll be together again,” as my title because I look so forward to being reunited with my dear dad when I eventually make my way to Heaven. Happy birthday, Pops! I love you and miss you always.

Product/technique notes

I had a great time combining papers from Authentique, Crate Paper, Fancy Pants and My Mind’s Eye on this page.

The challenge

The challenges on this blog involve following the sketch and using a title on your layout with a line from the provided music. Below I’ve included the video as well as the lyrics for this song:

“Stop!” by Erasure
We’ll be together again
I’ve been waiting for a long time
We’re gonna be, we’re gonna be together again
I’ll be connected to the right line
We’ll be together
And nobody ain’t never gonna
Disconnect us
Or ever separate us
Or say to us you’ve got to
Stop!

Stand there where you are
Before you go too far
Before you make a fool out of love
Stop!
Don’t jump before you look
Get hung up on a hook
Before you make a fool out of love

We’ll be together again
I’ve been waiting for a long time
We’re gonna be, we’re gonna be together again
I’ll be connected to the right line
We’ll be together
And nobody ain’t never gonna
Disconnect us
Or ever separate us
Or say to us you’ve got to
Stop!

Stand there where you are
Before you go too far
Before you make a fool out of love
Stop!
Don’t jump before you look
Get hung up on a hook
Before you make a fool out of love

We’ll be together
And nobody ain’t never gonna
Disconnect us
Or ever separate us
Or say to us you’ve got to
Stop!

Stand there where you are
Before you go too far
Before you make a fool out of love
Stop!
Don’t jump before you look
Get hung up on a hook
Before you make a fool out of love
Stop!

Another turning point

My family kidnapped me on my 21st birthday and took me out for a wonderful celebration at the Firestone Inn.

The tenth sketch challenge, which I’m proud to have designed, has been posted at the SCRAP & MUSIC challenge blog! Head over to the site to grab the sketch and play along. This tenth sketch came with the song “Time of your life” by Green Day.

Scrap & Music sketch #10

My layout

When considering this song as inspiration for a layout, I found my title in the very first line, “Another turning point.” To go along with the idea of turning points I pulled out a photo of my family helping me celebrate my 21st birthday on November 24, 1987.

That was a good day! Fortunately, although Phil and I were attending college at Ohio University four hours away, we were able to be home for my birthday because of the Thanksgiving holiday (I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love having a Thanksgiving birth date.). Knowing how much I love surprises, my parents had the evening all planned out and wouldn’t tell me a thing about it. Mom had even put together a special outfit for me to wear for our celebration—from the blouse, to the skirt that she had sewn without my knowing (and fit perfectly), to the shoes!

Everyone dressed up and got in the car, and Dad drove us to the neatest place for a special dinner. It was called the Firestone Inn. I don’t know whether it’s still in business because I haven’t found any mention of it online, but it was so lovely. We had a great dinner, and Dad allowed me to order wine with mine for the first time. 🙂

Product/technique notes

I had a great time combining a variety of new and old products from a number of manufacturers on this layout. The background paper is from the current BasicGrey “Carte Postale” collection, and it sets the color palette for the whole thing. The other patterns are from older American Crafts, Crate Paper, Fancy Pants, K&Company, My Mind’s Eye and Simple Stories collections. I designed and cut the title using the Silhouette Cameo.

The challenge

The challenges on this blog involve following the sketch and using a title on your layout with a line from the provided music. Below I’ve included the video as well as the lyrics for this song:

“Time of your life” by Green Day
Another turning point
a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist
directs you where to go
So make the best of this test
and don’t ask why
It’s not a question
but a lesson learned in time

It’s something unpredictable
but in the end it’s right
I hope you had the time of your life

So take the photographs
and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf
of good health and good time
Tattoos of memories
and dead skin on trial
For what it’s worth
it was worth all the while

It’s something unpredictable
but in the end it’s right
I hope you had the time of your life [X3]

Dear photograph

August 1, 2013 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 1 Comment

DearPhotograph_Daquila-Pardo

When setting up this photo, I took care to line up the counter tops in both shots.

Have you heard of or seen the website, Dear photograph? Their tagline is “Take a picture of a picture, from the past, in the present.” So, you take an older photo back to where it was first shot, hold it up in front of how the spot looks now and take another photo. Then you write a little message to go with it.

It’s a cool concept, and some of the photos that people submit are so great. Many times the person that’s in the older photo is no longer living, so the “dear photograph” message they write to go with it is about that. Sometimes the two photos just highlight how much or how little has changed in the intervening time.

Last Christmas my brother gave me the book version of “Dear photograph,” and ever since I’ve wanted to do a layout based on the same concept. On the last day of Phil’s Christmas visit to Austin this year, we stopped at a little coffee shop to kill time before going to the airport, and we took photos of ourselves there. I thought this shot of Phil in front of the coffee bar would make a great DP-style photo. So we recently went back to the same coffee shop and set up the shot. See how the lines of the counter line up in the two photos? Coolness, huh?

And the message I wrote to the photograph is: “That coffee shop was a lot more fun when Phil was there with us!”

Product/technique notes

I created this layout using all products from the Fancy Pants Designs’ “Memories Captured” collection, which suited my photo just perfectly both in theme and color scheme! I designed this page specifically to participate in the Fancy Pants Designs/Gossamer Blue guest designer contest. Wish me luck! Oh, and I designed the title and sunburst background cut files on the Silhouette Cameo. My hope is that the sunburst pattern subtly suggests the feel of a camera flash.

The eyes have it

August 20, 2011 By Janice Daquila-Pardo Leave a Comment

I just love when I can complete a layout about a subject that matters to me while simultaneously fulfilling the requirements for three online challenges! This is one hard-working layout!

NatureAndBooks_Daquila-Pardo

Nature and books belong to the eyes that see them. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

First, I based my design on this great sketch from the Sketchy Thursdays site. The added requirement was that the topic cover reading or literature in some way in honor of the start of the school year. I just love this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, so I decided to use it as my title: “Nature and books belong to the eyes that see them.” Then I took a photo of some favorite books on our library shelf and pulled out a photo I took last spring of a beautiful budding tree in our neighborhood.

Second, I created this to enter into Shimelle’s Grid It Up challenge.

Third, this will also work for Shimelle’s Stickery challenge, where the mandate is to use stickers from more than one collection (I have used stickers on this layout from American Crafts, Basic Grey, My Mind’s Eye and October Afternoon, so I think I’ve over-delivered!).

Speaking of reading, do you love Jane Eyre? Well, Matt and I love the story, and we recently watched a TV miniseries version that we hadn’t seen before, starring Timothy Dalton as Mr. Rochester (from 1983). Enjoying it so much reminded me that I had a novel about the writing of Jane Eyre up on our bookshelf. I pulled that down and have have been caught up in it for the past few days. In Becoming Jane Eyre Sheila Kohle combines what is know of Bronte’s life with her imagination of how that life lead her to write the highly successful book Jane Eyre. If you’re a fan of Bronte’s masterpiece in particular or of historical fiction, I can recommend this novel.
