Easter morning 2013

April 23, 2014 By Janice Daquila-Pardo Leave a Comment

EasterMorning_Daquila-Pardo

We had just been to 7:30 am Easter mass.

It has been too long since I had an overlap in time to scrap and motivation to scrap. Geez, I’ve missed it! So I finally finished up this page, which I started about a week before Easter. It’s a tripod-assisted selfie we took right after returning home from Easter mass last year. Matt only puts on a sports coat for Christmas and Easter, so I have to take advantage of the moment.

Product/technique notes

I had to dig deeeeeep in my stash to find these 2006 papers from Kelly Panacci for Sandylion. But I still like them, and they match my dress so well! I cut the daisies and title on the Silhouette Cameo. And I don’t know if you can see it, but I hand-stitched a big circle in turquoise embroidery thread to pull everything together.

We were born and raised in a summery haze

Isn't Phil adorable in his little boy glasses? And I just love my red shoes.

The 23rd sketch challenge has been posted at the SCRAP & MUSIC challenge blog! Head over to the site to grab the sketch and play along. This sketch came with the song “Someone like you” by Adele.

Scrap & Music sketch #23

My layout

I really liked the line from Adele’s song, “We were born and raised in a summery haze.” I could feel that. So I found an old photo from one of the summers of my childhood. It was July 1971; Phil was three years old and I was four. We’re posing for this photo in our driveway, dressed in the cute little outfits Mom always put on us. And we were obviously ready for anything.

Product/technique notes

Almost everything on this page is from Amy Tangerine’s “Yes, please” collection by American Crafts. I created the title in the Silhouette software and cut it on my Cameo.

The challenge

The challenges on this blog involve following the sketch and using a title on your layout with a line from the provided music. Below I’ve included the video as well as the lyrics for this song:

“Someone like you” by Adele

I heard that you’re settled down
That you found a girl and you’re married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things, I didn’t give to you

Old friend
Why are you so shy
It ain’t like you to hold back
Or hide from the light

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me, it isn’t over

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don’t forget me, I beg, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead, yeah

You’d know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summery haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me, it isn’t over yet

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don’t forget me, I beg, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead, yeah

Nothing compares, no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes they’re memories made
Who would have known how bitter-sweet this would taste

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you
Don’t forget me, I beg, I remembered you said
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don’t forget me, I beg, I remembered you said
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead, yeah, yeah

Parting shots

It's always hard to say goodbye at the airport.

Matt always takes lots of photos when I hand the camera over to him. Often he just shoots and shoots without even trying to set up a shot or focus. I’ll admit that I usually get a little exasperated that he doesn’t “try harder” to get a few good photos, but in this case I really liked how it worked out. My brother, Phil, was about to get onto an airplane to head back to North Carolina after spending a great week with us, and Matt captured all the emotions of our goodbye.

When I opened my photo-organizer software to choose three pictures to use on this layout (based on the sketch below), I realized that I didn’t want to edit out any of them. I wanted to show all the moments. So here are 15 little emotion-filled candids…and don’t miss the one that’s not like the others.

Product/technique notes

I followed the sketch below for my layout and will be entering it into the Creative Scrappers sketch challenge. The papers are from Colorbok and Crate Paper. I designed and cut the title on my Cameo as well as using the arrow cut file provided at Creative Scrappers.

New ‘do

This was taken in the driveway of our Willoughby home in October 1967.

This is just a sweet photo of me at just under a year old after having my hair cut. I look pretty happy with it, but I’m honestly not sure why!

Product/technique notes

I followed the sketch below for my layout and will be entering it into the Paper Camellia February sketch contest. The papers are all from Crate Paper’s “DIY Shop.”

Good to the last crop

Susan and Kimberly met me for our last Archiver's crop together in January.

About four years ago I decided I wanted to meet some people who shared my love of scrapbooking, so I signed up for a crop at the nearby Archiver’s store. Yes, it felt a little weird to go alone to a crop. But the point was that I didn’t have any local scrappy friends, so I had to go it alone. There was a table with three friends and one open seat, to which I was assigned. Well, that worked out pretty well!

Four years later we’re still friends. We’ve met at Archiver’s to crop together (some would just call it telling stories and snacking with our scrap supplies out on the table), not every month, but often throughout the year ever since that first night. So once Archiver’s announced that it was closing, we decided we had to do one last crop together. We met at the store on a Friday night and “scrapped” as usual. But the shelves were mostly empty, and in fact many of the shelves were already gone.

I’m quite sad to see Archiver’s go. Over the years I got to know most of the people who worked there, so there were times that I would just stop in to “talk shop” rather than to shop shop. When the news was first released about their closing, I was not at all surprised. The signs had all been there, so I just accepted it as inevitable. But the next day I was much more upset about it! I said to Matt, “I’m just so angry that Archiver’s didn’t make it. Now there aren’t any scrapbook stores in the area.” Matt said, “Honey, it makes sense that you’re angry. You’re grieving. That was more that just a store to you. You were friends with many of the employees and could always go there to talk about the hobby you love.”

He was absolutely right. We all need a place we can go to be around people who share our interests, “where everybody knows your name,” so to speak. So I am grieving the loss of that in my life. But, while I’m sad that Archiver’s is now history, I’m grateful that it was part of my history. I have befriended some wonderful people because of the chance I took that night. Scrappy trails, Archiver’s.

Product/technique notes

I followed the sketch below for my layout and will be entering it into the PageMaps’ Gossamer Blue February kit sketch contest. The background paper is by Pebbles; the stripes and butterfly papers are by My Mind’s Eye; and the purple paper is by K&Company.
