A perfect autumn day

November 9, 2014 By Janice Daquila-Pardo Leave a Comment

PerfectAutumnDay2_Daquila-Pardo

In my opinion, there’s no better way to celebrate and appreciate the wonder of the fall season than to be out in nature.

In Austin, Texas, there are often whole autumn seasons that are rather colorless. We don’t have a lot of the types of trees that change color in a bold way. Add to that the fact that many of our summers are too dry to offer the right conditions for great color change in the ones that can.

But we are fortunate to be only a few hours from Lost Maples State Natural Area, where there is a combination of steep limestone canyons, springs, plateau grasslands, wooded slopes and clear streams. It features a large, isolated stand of uncommon Uvalde bigtooth maple, whose fall foliage can be spectacular.

Each fall I track the fall foliage reports offered on the park’s website, and Matt and I try to make the trip (thought it doesn’t always happen, as it is about three hours’ drive). The photos on this layout are from November 2013. It was a perfect day to go on the strenuous five-mile hike to see the colors and take photos. What a great way to get out of town and revel in the beauty of nature!

Product/technique notes

The background paper is from the Fancy Pants “Happy-Go-Lucky” collection, and the other patterns are from October Afternoon’s “Apple Cider.” I embellished with stickers from Echo Park’s “Reflections Fall” and “Fall Fever” collections and added some hand stitching to bring out the turquoise in the patterns.

Using stitching on a layout as more than just decoration

Say bon voyage to boring layouts with hand stitching!

Stitching on scrapbook pages is used all the time—I use it all the time—to accent and decorate. It’s a beautiful way to highlight a portion of your design and makes a page more special. But it needn’t always be relegated to the embellishment category on our layouts. In the case of today’s page, you can see that it provides much of the meaning, too.

I wanted to leave as much of my background map paper on show as possible, but I didn’t want my page to be too simple, lest it turn out boring. As I thought about all the trips my mom has taken over the years during her summer breaks from teaching, it hit me that the design needed a fanciful flight pattern to complete the look and the message. And stitching was the perfect way to do that! I doodled a quick curlicue path with pencil, pierced holes along the route and stitched it with hot pink embroidery floss to match my mom’s shirt.

Celebrate Blogtoberfest with me all month!

This October I celebrate four years of scrapbook blogging! And that makes me feel like having a little party, so I’m hosting Blogtoberfest. Sorry, you’ll have to supply your own beer and brats, but I’ll bring the paper-crafting inspiration:

  • sketches
  • tutorials
  • product reviews
  • free cut files
  • a giveaway: I’ll reveal the details a little later

“Roll out the paper.
We’ll have a barrel of fun!”

I do hope you’ll join me often this month and help me celebrate the good things that scrapbooking brings to our lives.

Product/technique notes

The travel-themed patterned papers I used are from Jillibean Soup’s “Sightseeing Stew” collection, and the others are older scraps from my stash. The airplane is a foam Thickers sticker.

On a journey of selfie discovery

Taking good selfies is already a challenge, but try doing it in a darkened movie theater!

It’s always so fun to share something you love with someone you love. While visiting Mom and Phil in NC this summer, I took Phil to a matinee showing of “Guardians of the Galaxy” because I knew he was unlikely to go on his own but would really enjoy it. He did! We took these silly selfies to post to Facebook as we waited for the movie to begin. “We are Groot.”

Product/technique notes

I used pattern papers from October Afternoon, Jillibean Soup and Bella Blvd and followed this sketch from PageMaps and A Cherry on Top.

Would you like to use this title on a page of your own? I’m making it available as a freebie*; just click on the image below to download the Silhouette file. And if you do use it please come back and leave a comment on this post so I can ooh and ahh over it. 🙂

10 things I love about you

We lost my mother-in-law on this date in 2007 and miss her every day.

On September 11, 2007, my mother-in-law lost her fight with ALS. As a tribute to her I’ve created this page that features a photo of her in July of that year and a list of 10 things I loved about her:

  1. Her fierce dedication to those she loved
  2. Her love of animals
  3. Her easy-going nature
  4. Her love of laughter
  5. Her joy in being a teacher
  6. Her strength
  7. Her pride in her children and grandchildren
  8. Her talkativeness
  9. Her persistence
  10. How readily she accepted me into her family

We miss and love you, Sandra.

Product/technique notes

I created this layout using the Stuck?! Sketches anniversary celebration sketch and products from Little Yellow Bicycle’s “Just Because” collection.

Good help is hard to find

Oliver, sensing that the work at hand is both urgent and important, gets right on it.

Oliver, like most cats, loves to curl up on the newest at least semi-horizontal addition to his environment. So when Matt set up our computers on the dining room table one evening to rebuild them, Ollie found one of the keyboards irresistible. Thankfully, Matt called me into the room to see it, and I snapped these photos.

Product/technique notes

I followed this sketch from the Creative Scrappers Birthday Bash and used papers from Simple Stories’ “24/Seven” collection. The embellishments are from BasicGrey, October Afternoon, Panda Eight, and Studio Calico. I created the title on my Silhouette and added some hand stitching on the diagonal seam.
