My Mind's Eye

You are the dancing queen

February 9, 2014 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

Thyia was pretty much attached at the hip to her friends Shelly and Sonya all throughout high school.

The 21th sketch challenge has been posted at the SCRAP & MUSIC challenge blog! Head over to the site to grab the sketch and play along. This sketch came with the song “Dancing Queen” by ABBA.

Scrap & Music sketch #21

My layout

We are very fortunate to have many of Matt’s family photos because during his mother’s illness she asked us to take care of them (knowing about my photo preservation obsession hobby). Today’s layout features prom pictures of his younger sister, Thyia. My husband is the second of five children. Thyia was the youngest, born 10 years after Matt, so when she hit high school age he was already off to college.

This is the journaling from my page, which is rather small and may be too hard to read. I’m thankful to Thyia’s friend, Shelly, for giving me these photo details:
Thyia went to her junior prom in spring 1992 with a friend from the restaurant where she worked and her high school besties, Shelly and Sonya. They drove to Boone for dinner at Makato and before attending the dance at the Walker Center at Wilkes Community College.

Product/technique notes

I used papers from My Mind’s Eye’s “the sweetest thing » bluebell » playful” collection and created and cut the title on my Silhouette Cameo.

The challenge

The challenges on this blog involve following the sketch and using a title on your layout with a line from the provided music. Below I’ve included the video as well as the lyrics for this song:

“Dancing Queen” by ABBA

You can dance, you can jive
having the time of your life
see that girl, watch that scene
dig in the Dancing Queen
Friday night and the lights are low
looking out for the place to go
where they play the right music
getting in the swing
you come to look for a king
anybody could be that guy
night is young and the music’s high
with a bit of rock music
everything is fine
you’re in the mood for a dance
and when you get the chance
You are the Dancing Queen
young and sweet only seventeen
Dancing Queen
feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah
you can dance, you can jive
having the time of your life
see that girl, watch that scene
dig in the Dancing Queen
You’re a teaser, you turn ’em on
leave ’em burning and then you’re gone
looking out for another
anyone will do
you’re in the mood for a dance
and when you get the chance
You are the Dancing Queen
young and sweet only seventeen
Dancing Queen
feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah
you can dance, you can jive
having the time of your life
see that girl, watch that scene
dig in the Dancing Queen

All bundled up

The cold wind burns my face, and blows its frosty pepper up my nose.

This photo of me and and my bro, Phil, was taken in our front yard in the winter of 1972. You’ll notice we’re holding onto the rope of our sled, which we must have been pulling each other around on. I have pretty strong memories of playing in the snow in Ohio. I love the snow and wanted to be out in it, but I also loved how the snow looked untouched, right after it had fallen and there were no footprints or tire tracks in it. So I remember feeling conflicted about “ruining” it. Such a conundrum!

Because I only had one photo from this day, but I wanted to feature a closer look at the two of us in addition to the whole scene, I enlarged the focal area of the photo and printed it again.

Winter-Time

by Robert Louis Stevenson
Late lies the wintry sun a-bed,
A frosty, fiery sleepy-head;
Blinks but an hour or two; and then,
A blood-red orange, sets again.

Before the stars have left the skies,
At morning in the dark I rise;
And shivering in my nakedness,
By the cold candle, bathe and dress.

Close by the jolly fire I sit
To warm my frozen bones a bit;
Or with a reindeer-sled, explore
The colder countries round the door.

When to go out, my nurse doth wrap
Me in my comforter and cap;
The cold wind burns my face, and blows
Its frosty pepper up my nose.

Black are my steps on silver sod;
Thick blows my frosty breath abroad;
And tree and house, and hill and lake,
Are frosted like a wedding-cake.

Product/technique notes

I used this Page Drafts sketch and glitter papers from an older My Mind’s Eye collection called “Frost” to complete this page. The papers matched these photos so well!

Bring it, 2014

January 15, 2014 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

BringIt2014_Daquila-Pardo

I created this page to participate in the My Mind's Eye January 14 Things challenge.

We always create goals for the new year and spend a good deal of energy on achieving them. This year the difference is that I’m going public with them. Why not? Accountability is motivating. So here are my 14 for 2014:
1. Publish first book
2. Write second book
3. No TV during the week
4. Create new workout routine
5. Incorporate more GF recipes into repertoire
6. Daquila-Pardo University
7. De-clutter
8. Get more sleep/drink more water
9. Learn more about photography
10. Build WordPress skills
11. Scan files to become paperless
12. Organize family photos
13. Spend more time with friends/have more fun
14. Choose to be happy every day

The photo is of me and my friend, Audrey, laughing at the Christmas party she and her husband hosted. It goes with my 13th goal, “Spend more time with friends/have more fun.”

Product/technique notes

Everything on this page except the cardstock is by My Mind’s Eye, mostly from the “Find your wings and fly” collection.

Cover me up, cuddle me in

January 12, 2014 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 4 Comments

CuddleMe_Daquila-Pardo

Spenser had me wrapped around his little paw from the second we met.

The 19th sketch challenge has been posted at the SCRAP & MUSIC challenge blog! Head over to the site to grab the sketch and play along. This sketch came with the song “Kiss Me” by Ed Sheeran.

Scrap & Music sketch #19

My layout

Our family adopted our precious puppy, Spenser, in early 1991. I loved cuddling with him so much. These two photos are of us spooning on the couch in the fall of 1991, so Spenser would have been six months old in the left picture and seven months old in the right one. The line “Cover me up, cuddle me in” from the challenge song was a perfect fit for my title.

Product/technique notes

I used several patterns from the Pebbles “Walnut Grove” 6×6 paper pad to create the layers on this design, and the background is from the My Mind’s Eye “Cut & Paste” collection.

The challenge

The challenges on this blog involve following the sketch and using a title on your layout with a line from the provided music. Below I’ve included the video as well as the lyrics for this song:

“Kiss Me” by Ed Sheeran

Settle down with me
Cover me up, cuddle me in
Lie down with me, yeah
And hold me in your arms

And your heart’s against my chest
Your lips pressed to my neck
I’m falling for your eyes but they don’t know me yet
And with a feeling I’ll forget, I’m in love now

Kiss me like you wanna be loved
You wanna be loved, you wanna be loved
This feels like falling in love
Falling in love, we’re falling in love

Settle down with me
And I’ll be your safety, you’ll be my lady
I was made to keep your body warm
But I’m cold as the wind blows
So hold me in your arms

My heart’s against your chest
Your lips pressed to my neck
I’m falling for your eyes but they don’t know me yet
And with this feeling I’ll forget, I’m in love now

Kiss me like you wanna be loved
You wanna be loved, you wanna be loved
This feels like falling in love
Falling in love, we’re falling in love

Yeah I’ve been feeling everything
From hate to love, from love to lust, from lust to truth
I guess that’s how I know you
So hold you close to help you give it up

So kiss me like you wanna be loved
You wanna be loved, you wanna be loved
This feels like falling in love
Falling in love, we’re falling in love

Kiss me like you wanna be loved
You wanna be loved, you wanna be loved
This feels like falling in love
Falling in love, we’re falling in love

Christmas blizzard

December 6, 2013 By Janice Daquila-Pardo Leave a Comment

ChristmasBlizzard_Daquila-Pardo

Phil and Mom were stranded in NYC for Christmas because of the blizzard.

Do you remember the blizzard that hit the northeast in 2010 just one day after Christmas? My mom and brother sure do because they were stranded in NYC for seven days. The Blizzard of 2010 dumped between 18 and 24 inches of snow with wind gusts up to 60 mph.

Flights were cancelled as the storm came to town, and Mom and Phil’s annual holiday trip was extended from three nights to seven. The snow was more than just gorgeous, it also allowed them to make up for the time they had lost while Mom was ill during the first part of their trip. They made the most of the situation and had a wonderful snowy time!

Product/technique notes

All my photos are 3×4, which made it easy to create this grid design. I used my Cameo to cut the trees, snowflakes and “Christmas” for the title. The beautiful white glittered letters that spell out “blizzard” are Thickers, of course. I used a 2007 Christmas collection by My Mind’s Eye called “Festive.” I love using older products when the colors/designs go so well with my photos; it’s like they were MFEO. 😉 I’d call this a shop-your-stash page, wouldn’t you?
