Capture the flag: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

February 15, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 3 Comments

Capture the flag is a one-photo scrapbook page based on the February 15th sketch at Stuck?! Sketches.

Today Stuck?! Sketches launches our second challenge of February. Grab the sketch and play along for some great prizes from Lindy’s Stamp Gang and ScrapMuch.

Matt’s study of information security has inevitably led him to participating in Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions. He has put together an international team of players to tackle the complex infosec puzzles together, and they have been steadily improving their ranking. He really loves the weekends he spends “CTFing.”

Product/technique notes

I used patterned paper (6×6 paper pad) and die cuts from BasicGrey’s Capture collection and hand stitched the circles.

20 years of friendship

February 7, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 7 Comments

20 years of friendship is a one-photo scrapbook page based on the Let's Get Sketchy February 1st sketch.

Just last week Matt was attending a business lunch and texted me: “What day did we meet?”

After I got over my surprise at the question (not the kind of thing he usually thinks about at a business meeting—I later found out it was because of a conversation he was having with a newly married man who was planning to celebrate the day he met his wife on February 4th), I answered: “Monday, February 5, 1996.”

And then it hit me that we were rounding the bend on the 20th anniversary of meeting each other! Wowsers.

So this past Friday we went out for a late lunch to commemorate our 20th meetiversary. It was very nice, and we took a few photos to mark the date. But you know I also had to make a special layout about this milestone. I rummaged through some photos from 1996 and found this one of us dressed up to go out (somewhere I can’t recall) on a date. It’s from the fall of 1996, but you know we just don’t have any selfies from the day we met, as we might nowadays.

My journaling on the page reads:

Matt & I met on Monday, February 5, 1996, when he came to my Manning Hall office for a meeting. Neither of us could know how much that meeting would change our lives.

How blessed we are to have each other’s friendship.

Product/technique notes

I followed this Let’s Get Sketchy February 1st sketch and used papers from My Mind’s Eye, American Crafts, and Echo Park. The title is my own design that was cut on the Silhouette Cameo.

It’s not every day yer young man turns 80 now, is it?

January 30, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

I created this one-photo scrapbook page about our neighbor turning 80 and used products from Colorbok, My Mind's Eye, Crate Paper, Simple Stories, and K&Co.

Charlie used to live across the street from us, and when he moved away a couple of years ago we really lost a gem in our neighborhood. He’s the kind of man you wish you knew more of—vibrant, kind, generous, funny, a storyteller.

When he came into town for his 80th birthday celebration, his daughter graciously invited us to the party. Who wouldn’t want to celebrate this guy?

Note: If the title of my page sounds vaguely familiar to you, it’s because I took a line from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and changed it for my needs. Remember when Hagrid hunts down the Dursley family so he can give Harry a birthday cake and says: “It’s not every day yer young man turns 11 now, is it?”

Fun times

January 27, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 7 Comments

Fun Times is a one-photo scrapbook page created using products from Chickaniddy Crafts.

This photo is from a reunion that was 20 years in the making. Jim was my best friend in college. But after we graduated, although we stayed in touch for a few years, we eventually drifted apart (new jobs, new cities, boyfriends, girlfriends). Thankfully, Jim reestablished contact with me several years ago, but because we live many states apart we still never got together to catch up in person.

Then in the summer of 2012, when I was planning a trip to North Carolina to visit my mom and bro, I decided to ask Jim if he would be able to meet somewhere between his home state of Ohio and my mom’s house. We chose to meet up in Richmond, Virginia. He brought his mom (who I knew from when we were in college together), and I brought my mom and brother, Phil (who was also friends with Jim in college).

We had the BEST day together! We walked for miles and saw Richmond while catching up after all those years apart. We had lunch in this particularly nice little restaurant, where they gave us a private dining room. The waiter was wonderful and even took some photos of us all together.

Product/technique notes

I followed the ScrapMuch sketch below and used papers and die cuts from the Chickaniddy Crafts Scrumptious collection.

It’s your special day: Phil’s 7th birthday

January 17, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 10 Comments

It's your special day: Phil's 7th birthday

In honor of my baby brother’s 48th birthday, which he celebrated on Friday, I give you a page about his 1975 birthday celebration. When I asked him what he remembered from this photo he said:

Sweet, like Boston cream pie! That is Paul Lazorchak and he gave me that Snoopy hockey game, which I adored. Of course that is my cherished Franco Harris jersey. Lastly, too bad we did not have anti-glare coating at the time . Oh and what luck to capture you on a troop meeting night!

Happy birthday, Phillip Daniel! I wish I could have been there to celebrate with you, my dear.

Product/technique notes

I was inspired to follow the Let’s Get Sketchy week 1 January sketch for this page, and I used all products from the Carta Bella It’s a Celebration collection. It has just the perfect vintage birthday color scheme and feeling. And what kind of crazy luck did I have when I noticed that the birthday cake sticker had seven candles?
