Re-homing Hector

Re-homing Hector

The story

We found this beautiful beastie walking down the sidewalk on our street, far from any water. So we scooped him up and gave him a ride out to Brushy Creek. We named him Hector and wished him a happy, healthy life before Matt turned toward the water and tossed him in. I was shocked that he didn’t just put Hector near the water and let him decide whether to go in, and I said so. Matt blanched when he realized that he had just assumed that Hector swam. We quickly researched what kind of turtle he was and were greatly relieved to learn that he was a red-eared slider. Thank goodness, they’re strong swimmers!

Product/technique notes

The patterned papers are from the Pebbles Lakeside 6×6 paper pad. I cut out the title on my Silhouette, and I hand stitched the zigzag stitch down the center.

July 4th tradition: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

July 1, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 5 Comments

July 4th Tradition

Today Stuck?! Sketches launches our first challenge of July! Grab the sketch and play along for prizes from Wycinanka and DCWV.

Stuck?! Sketches July 1, 2016 sketch

The story

Our July 4th tradition has evolved over the years into: relaxing, going out for lunch served al fresco, and then enjoying the competing fireworks displays that our neighbors put on all around us. We get quite a good show in our own front yard!

Product/technique notes

I used patterned papers from the Pebbles Americana 6×6 paper pad. The flair is from Studio Calico. And I created the title with my Silhouette (the word “tradition” was a freebie I found on Jana Eubank’s site). I also played outside my comfort zone by spattering my background with Heidi Swapp gold color shine and red paint to echo the fireworks. (The gold looks much better IRL than in this photo.)

Good day sunshine: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

May 1, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 4 Comments

Good day sunshine is a one-photo scrapbook layout based on the May 1 2016 Stuck?! Sketches sketch.

Today Stuck?! Sketches launches our first challenge of May. Grab the sketch and play along for some great prizes from Wycinanka and ScrapMuch.

Stuck?! Sketches May 1 2016

There’s an amazing resource called Carolina Tiger Rescue, which is a nonprofit wildlife sanctuary whose mission is saving and protecting wild cats in captivity and in the wild. Fortunately, it’s in Pittsboro, NC, which is only half an hour’s ride from where my Mom and brother live. So while I was visiting them in August 2013, we made the trip to see the big cats. They were wondrous!

Of course, I took tons of photos of the gorgeous, majestic, magnificent animals. And I fully intend to do a page with a few of the best of those shots. But this one that I took of Mom and Phil as the group was moving into the sanctuary for the tour made the cut first. Why? Because it shows my loved ones looking happy and healthy on a day full of sunshine and adventures taken together. And that makes me wildly happy.

Product/technique notes

I used patterned paper from the Pebbles Family Ties collection. The title is made with Thickers glitter alphas and a chipboard piece from American Crafts. The dies cuts are from Shimelle, the glittered bird 3D sticker is from Little Yellow Bicycle, and the doily is from the Silhouette store.

I’m losing my sole

April 25, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo Leave a Comment

I'm losing my sole is a one-photo scrapbook page that uses supplies from Pebbles and Pink Paislee.

I got up on a rainy Wednesday morning in February to attend the monthly Catholic Business Network meeting. I parked my car, grabbed my purse, and started walking across the parking lot. And I walked right OFF my left shoe. I literally stepped off the sole of my shoe! I picked it up and hobbled into the meeting. Then I felt the sole of my right shoe crumble, too.

It was just like in Joe Versus the Volcano.

DeDe: Hi Joe, what’s with the shoe?
Joe Banks: I’m losing my sole.
DeDe: Yeah.

Product/technique notes

I used products from Pebbles Garden Party collection and Pink Paislee’s Hello Sunshine 6×6 pad, plus die cuts from Hello Sunshine. I designed and cut the title on my Silhouette Cameo.

My beautiful campus: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

April 15 2016 - Stuck Sketches

I was fortunate to spend four years earning my undergraduate degree at Ohio University in the 1980s. I don’t think there’s a way to work as hard as you have to when you’re taking a full load and holding down a job without having some difficult days. And I did. But mostly I loved my time there. I learned valuable stuff 😉 from some wonderful professors, made great friends, and matured from my experiences of being away from home.

And there was always one constant, on the good days and the bad: The beautiful campus made things better. On a day when I felt on top of the world and everything was going right, my gorgeous surroundings made me feel higher. And on a day when I hadn’t had enough sleep, was heading to an exam I knew I could never feel ready for, and was down in the dumps, being on that beautiful campus soothed my soul and lifted my spirits.

On this spring day in 1987, I’m posing with the cherry trees on the College Green, where the oldest administrative and classroom buildings are. It’s where the university started, and it’s where I felt at home away from home.

Product/technique notes

I used patterned paper from the Pebbles Garden Party collection. The title is made with Thickers alphas and a die cut from Shimmele. The bicycle sticker is from the Simple Stories Hugs & Kisses collection. The resin flower is from Fancy Pants.
