Happy hour

Mom, me and Phil enjoying happy hour in Saxapahaw, NC (August 2012)

I went to North Carolina this summer to visit my mother and brother, and we made a list of things we wanted to do while I was there. Phil brought up the idea of going to a town called Saxapahaw because he had read that it was a great day-trip option for foodies. It’s a small, sleepy town west of Chapel Hill, where my family lives, that has begun to gain renown because of the renovations and eateries that are being added:

  • Saxapahaw, N.C., Middle of Somewhere, Becomes a Draw
  • The Impulsive Traveler: Details, Saxapahaw, N.C..

We made the half-hour drive in high spirits and with high hopes. Yes, it was a hot and steamy day in August, but how bad could that be once we were lounging comfortably on the back deck of a Saxapahaw café, overlooking the beautiful Haw River and enjoying local gourmet food and beer?

Now, I don’t want to complain too much, but it was actually a little weird. Perhaps we went on a bad day—it was in the middle of the week in the afternoon—but there was nothing at all that we could find to “take in” about the place. And we only saw a handful of people during the few hours we spent there! I’m thinking maybe Saxapahaw has a really good PR person. 😉

Luckily, we ran into a man on the street who had bought and nicely renovated a portion of the old mill and turned it into The Eddy Pub. We took our rest there over an appetizer plate and some nice local beers. In the end we had a good time because, let’s face it, the company is always more important than the locale. And best of all our waitress graciously took this lovely photo of the three of us.

Product/technique notes:
I followed the November Club CK sketch, below, and am entering it in the challenge. The background paper (which put me in mind of designs you’d find in an old pub) is from Fancy Pants’ The Good Life collection, the butterfly stamps are by Martha Stewart Crafts, the flair is from BasicGrey’s Fact and Fiction collection.

Homecoming 1984

I went to the dance with Mike Lisi, and my brother took Jill Berlin.

A lot of my Facebook friends have children in high school, so I’ve seen my fair share of homecoming photos being posted lately. You know, shots of their high schooler with his/her date and friends and parents in front of the family room fireplace.

Exactly like we did before our homecoming dance in the fall of 1984! Not a lot changes over the years, does it? OK, maybe the fashions have changed a lot. 😉

Our dates came to our house for a photo session before we headed to the school gym for the event. My boyfriend, Mike, came home from his freshman year at Miami University to take me to the dance. And Phil took our friend, Jill. The whole thing was very exciting.

My journaling reads: “Homecoming in our senior year was a big event for me. Because my friend, Tatjana, was both Student Council president and homecoming queen, last-minute dance preparations were left to me as VP. Then there was the fun of choosing my dress and having Mike return from college to take me to the dance. We had such a lovely evening!”

Celtic warrior

I don't think Matt is quite right as a redhead. 😉

For Halloween in 2005 Matt wanted to wear his kilt and be a Celtic warrior, so we pulled together this outfit. After doing a little online research for face tattoo designs, I “tattooed” Matt’s face. It was fun to do! Then we sprayed his hair with this outrageous color of orange to finish the look.

Admittedly, it’s a hodgepodge costume, but it’s fun and looks good on my guy. And he got a great reaction when he wore it to his business meetings that day!

Product/technique notes:
On this layout I used products from Echo Park, Little Yellow Bicycle, My Mind’s Eye, Paper Studio and Pink Paisley. I cut the title on my Silhouette using the Stonecross font.

Baby’s first acorn

I created this layout to celebrate this natural beauty.

Our city had a “free tree” program this spring to increase shade in our drought-stricken desert climate, so we signed up to receive one. We planted this tiny oak in an open area of our back yard and watered it faithfully all summer.

The other day I watched a locust catapult itself from the grass into our little oak, so I ran over to check it out. When I got up close to see it, I found this adorable acorn. Just one on the whole tree. The locust is so many times larger than the acorn, and it was just so beautiful. I had to capture this lovely moment with nature and dedicate a layout to it.

Product/technique notes:
The majority of the patterns I used here are from Little Yellow Bicycle’s Acorn Hollow collection.

Would you like fries with that?

My ensemble is from the Bob Evans fashion house, and Phil is head-to-toe Burger King.

Polyester restaurant uniforms do nothing for the wearer’s self esteem, I can tell you from personal experience. Will you take a look at this 1987 photo that my mom snapped of Phil and me just as we were both about to head to our respective summer jobs? Wow.

I got to wear a deep rust double-knit with little flowers and a matching apron for my waitress gig at Bob Evans. And mine was the good uniform of the two! Poor Phil had to wear this ghastly bright rust ensemble, with a faux vest attached to the shirt—and a matching ball cap—to work at Burger King.

There are certain things that teenagers don’t traditionally like to do. Being forced to wear something they dislike is one of them. But because we wanted to save money for college, Phil and I donned these polyester monstrosities several times a week to earn our pay. Teenagers also don’t much like having their photograph taken when they’re in said ugly clothes, but Mom insisted on getting this shot. Now I’m really happy that she did because I love having photographic evidence of our days of slinging hash to stack cheese.

Product/technique notes
I used Simple Stories Harvest Lane products to make this page (the colors were just perfect) and sketch #189 from Creative Scrappers.
