23 years later

We had such a lovely time visiting with Jim and his mom after all these years apart.

Jim and I became friends right at the start of college and were besties all the way through. I’ve talked about him before in this post because he cycled 102 miles to raise money for cancer research last year. But let me be plain about how lucky I feel to have met and claimed Jim as my best friend in that really vulnerable first week of freshman year: I won the friendship lottery! There, I said it.

Historically, one of the most popular weekends of the year at Ohio University is Moms Weekend. That first photo in my layout is a shot I took of Jim and his mother and my brother and our mother during Moms Weekend in our senior year (1989). We all had a great time hanging out together that weekend. Now fast forward 23 years to the second photo, taken this past summer when the five of us met up for the first time since the other photo—23 years later! We had an amazing day together, full of laughter, and it was so overdue.

Now to illuminate any non-scrapbook folk out there reading this: Scrapbookers are almost always using part of their brains on scrapbook thoughts. In this case, once I knew that Phil, Mom and I were going to drive to Virginia to meet up with Jim and his mom, the first thing I thought to do was pull out this old photo, scan and color correct it and then print it to take along. Why? So I could set up the same shot and then scrapbook them together, of course. And give Jim the photo to take home.

And that’s what I did. The problem was that I forgot about taking this photo until we were walking Jim and his mom through a pedestrian overpass and back to their hotel for the night. It didn’t turn out to be the awesome photo I envisioned, but I came home with the shot and the wonderful memories, and that’s what really mattered.

I’m entering this layout in the My Mind’s Eye October challenge (incorporate stamping into your project).

Write. Click. Scrapbook.

October 5, 2012 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 1 Comment

I am so excited and honored today because I am one of two designers being featured on Write. Click. Scrapbook. as part of their Talent Abounds Week! If you are visiting me from the WCS site, I am so pleased to have you here.

I thought that seeing as my WCS post is about my love for scrapbooking with sketches, I would create a sketch for you to download and a sample layout based on it. Because I often design pages with vintage photos from my childhood, and my parents—as so many people did with film cameras—took only a few photos of most events, I find myself needing a lot of one- or two-photo sketches. So I designed this one-photo sketch to work with.

The truth is that yesterday was our 15th anniversary, so I wanted to scrap one of our wedding photos and thought that a double-wedding-ring-quilt look would be great to try. Here is the sketch:

If you use this sketch I would love to see your layout!

And here is my layout:

The colors in the BasicGrey Plumeria patterned papers were perfect because of how they went with my bouquet.

I also created the cut file for the quilt element so that I could cut it out on my Silhouette. If you have a Silhouette and would like to try this file, just leave me a comment asking for it (be sure to include your email address) and I will send it to you.

I want to thank Write. Click. Srapbook. again for this wonderful opportunity to appear on their blog today. I have so much respect for their designers and writers and really find great inspiration there. And thank you for visiting my blog today. I do hope you’ll leave me a quick message to let me know you were here and I hope you’ll come back again. 🙂

So happy together

Enjoying Tuesdays on the Patio at Weathervane at Southern Season with Phil and Mom, July 31, 2012.

I took a trip home to North Carolina in late July/early August to visit my mom and bro. This photo is just a nice one from our first full day together, after we had enjoyed a good meal, local wines and live music on the back patio of Weathervane restaurant at Southern Season in Chapel Hill.

Product/technique notes:
I used patterned papers from BasicGrey (the heart paper is from the Olivia collection), Fancy Pants (the background text) and My Mind’s Eye (everything else). I created the title (my own design) and the flowers (from Silhouette) using the Silhouette cutting machine, and I followed sketch #225 from Creative Scrappers:

We have a winner!

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog this week for the Creative Scrappers blog hop. Out of all the sweet comments that were left, Nancy’s was the winning message. Congratulations, Nancy! You have won a copy of the Creative Scrappers Creating with Sketches book. I will be sending you an email soon about this.

And now, here is my latest layout:

We were having ice cream at Dairy Queen when we "took" these photos.

The funny little story that this page documents happened in July. When Matt and I went to Dairy Queen one weekend, I took along our new little point-and-shoot camera. I asked Matt to pose with me for a quick self-portrait before we started eating. We smiled and I took the photo. Then, while I was still holding the camera, it started clicking off more rapid-fire shots, even though my finger was no longer on the shutter release button! It took a few shots before I could figure out what was happening.

Well, earlier that day I had been fiddling with the camera settings and then promptly forgotten that one of the selections I made was for something called “smile detection” (whatever that was). We figured it out pretty quickly because every time we laughed at what was happening, it snapped more photos.

It was just a funny little moment…but worth recording (especially since we had so many photos of it!).

School picnic

August 31, 2012 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 1 Comment

Do you recognize the vintage Making Memories background papers I used?

My brother and I went to a Catholic grade school through eighth grade, which means that we wore uniforms every day of the school year, except on a few special days. The end-of-the-year picnic was one of those times. The school’s tradition was to take the upper classmen—the seventh and eighth graders—for a day of fresh air at nearby Daniels Park.

The picture in this layout is of me and my friends, Stephanie and Mike, in June 1980. I assume my brother took the photo, as he and Mike were best friends throughout grade school.

Product/technique notes:
I created most of this page using—do you recognize it—Making Memories’ Just Chillin’ line from 2008! It’s nice sometimes to dig deep and use the old supplies, isn’t it? You also see a little Simple Stories and Bella Boulevard on there.

The sketch I followed is from Club Creating Keepsakes’ August Sketch it out challenge.
