BSides Austin: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

June 15, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 3 Comments

BSides Austin is a 4-photo scrapbook layout based on the June 15, 2016 sketch from Stuck?! Sketches.

Today Stuck?! Sketches launches our second challenge of June! Grab the sketch and play along for a $20 gift certificate from Evalicious or two large pieces of chipboard from ScrapMatts.

Stuck Sketches June 15 2016

The story

We did it! Matt and I took over the planning of the security BSides conference, and we made it bigger and better than ever. We had about 400 attendees, standing room only for the keynote speech, and a Dual Core show to round out the two days. I’m not gonna lie—it was hard work. But I’m proud of how we worked together to make it great. Now we have to decide whether to organize it again next year. Ugh!

Photos, L-R:

  1. Matt in front of the 400 attendees giving the opening address
  2. Standing room only for the keynote (Ed Skoudis)
  3. The registration desk during some down time
  4. Dual Core singing us home

Product/technique notes

I used patterned papers from Echo Park’s All About a Boy collection. The two pieces of flair are from different BasicGrey collections (Aurora and Fact & Fiction). And I traced the logo for the conference and cut it with my Silhouette for the title.

Living in a cool city: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

May 15, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 4 Comments

Living in a cool city is a two-photo, one-page scrapbook page based on the Stuck?! Sketches May 15 2016 sketch.

Today Stuck?! Sketches launches our second challenge of May. Grab the sketch and play along for a $20 gift certificate from Evalicious or a $25 gift certificate from Creative Embellishments.

Stuck?! Sketches May 15 2016 sketch

The story

Austin, where we have lived for going on 15 years, is pretty well known for being cool. For years it has made it somewhere onto many of the myriad “best places to live” lists. In fact, it famously celebrates its odd residents and culture with the unofficial slogan of “Keep Austin Weird.”

We’re well educated, high-tech, entrepreneurial, and fun. Well, at least as a whole we are. And we have tons of things to do for fun on any given day of the week.

You may have heard of a little music/film/interactive festival called South by Southwest (SXSW). Or perhaps you have friends who’ve been to the Austin City Limits music festival. Those are kind of a big deal. And there are so many other big beautiful events throughout the year that it’s impossible to keep up.

Matt was downtown one day during the mid-March interactive week of SXSW and snapped a few photos of the Mr. Robot Ferris wheel that they inserted into our skyline during the festival. And I thought for about the millionth time how cool it is to live in a place that celebrates in so many ways throughout the year. So I designed this page with images of two of the many (SXSW and the Kite Festival) ways.

Product/technique notes

I used patterned paper and stickers from the Echo Park Scoot collection and designed and cut the title and circle grid with my Silhouette Cameo. To mimic the look of the Ferris wheel I laced embroidery thread across the backgound circle like spokes.

I’m losing my sole

April 25, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo Leave a Comment

I'm losing my sole is a one-photo scrapbook page that uses supplies from Pebbles and Pink Paislee.

I got up on a rainy Wednesday morning in February to attend the monthly Catholic Business Network meeting. I parked my car, grabbed my purse, and started walking across the parking lot. And I walked right OFF my left shoe. I literally stepped off the sole of my shoe! I picked it up and hobbled into the meeting. Then I felt the sole of my right shoe crumble, too.

It was just like in Joe Versus the Volcano.

DeDe: Hi Joe, what’s with the shoe?
Joe Banks: I’m losing my sole.
DeDe: Yeah.

Product/technique notes

I used products from Pebbles Garden Party collection and Pink Paislee’s Hello Sunshine 6×6 pad, plus die cuts from Hello Sunshine. I designed and cut the title on my Silhouette Cameo.

Every single time

April 19, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

Every single time is a one-photo scrapbook page using papers from Crate Paper.

Normally, this photo would be a throwaway because of Matt’s closed eyes. But when I saw it I had an inspiration to instead record for all time the phenomenon of the “Pardo first-photo blink.” That is a scientific fact in our lives. Ever single time Matt poses for a photo, he blinks for at least the first one. He’s ridiculously consistent about this, which is annoying and funny at the same time. And that seems like the right kind of everyday story to tell in my scrapbook.

Product/technique notes

For this page I used a combination of Crate Paper (the wild background pattern and the strip at the top) and the BasicGrey J’Adore 6×6 paper pad. I cut the title on my Silhouette, and sprinkled sequins about.

Spring in the hood

April 11, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 4 Comments

Spring in the hood is a 2-photo scrapbook page featuring supplies from DCWV.

On this layout I just wanted to capture the beauty of a few of spring’s early offerings in my neighborhood: bluebonnets and redbud trees. Such beautiful colors.

Product/technique notes

The papers I used, which matched the colors in my photos so well, are from an old DCWV stack called Pocket Full of Posies. I die cut the flowers background using a Silhouette file and designed the title to be cut on the Silhouette as well.
