Matt is a Marvel devotee from way back. He and his brother, Tom, collected comic books when they were boys, but while Matt’s allegiance was to Marvel, Tom loved DC Comics. Each month when the new issues came out they would go down to the hobby store to make their purchase. Even though he loved his collection, Matt tells me that when the price went up to 55 cents a piece it became too rich for his blood and he gave up on it (funny detail).

Now as an adult Matt has shared his love of superheroes with me. We don’t read comic books together, but who needs to with all the comics-based movies that have come out in recent years? And I admit that I love them and look forward to them as much as Matt does, even though I don’t know as much about their origin stories as he does. I just love to root for a hero on his/her journey.

In this photo we are at the Alamo Drafthouse theater in Austin awaiting the start of Ant-Man on its opening day, July 17th.

Product/technique notes

I used some older Bella Blvd (Mr.Boy) and BasicGrey papers and designed and cut the burst shapes and title on my Silhouette.

This circa 1977 photo is of my husband and his family stopping for a rest while on a hike on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina. Matt is the cutie on the left leaning on the tree (with attitude).

Product/technique notes

I used patterned papers from LYB “Fern & Forest,” My Little Shoebox “Green,” Pebbles “Lakeside” and We R Memory Keepers “Happy Campers” collections. The chipboard pieces are from Crate Paper “The Pier” and “Story Teller.” Then I designed and cut the title on my Silhouette.

Nothing beats a good book: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

July 15, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 1 Comment

This scrapbook layout is about my answer to the question "Do you like reading on a device as much as from a print book?" My answer is "I love them both because nothing beats a good book."

Today Stuck?! Sketches is revealing its second sketch challenge of July, and you’re going to love the design team layouts for this one. Please join us over at the blog and allow the sketch and the design team inspire you to play along. We have great sponsor prizes up for grabs.

Stuck?! Sketches July 15 2015 sketch

Reading has always made me happy. What’s not to love about getting lost in a story or an idea?

I take great pleasure in holding a book and turning its pages. I rejoice when I can see and feel that I have passed the halfway point in the story. I get a giddy feeling when I pick up the book and find the bookmark holding my place so I can immerse myself again. I keenly feel that satisfying yet mournful moment when I close the book with a thump for the last time after reading the final words. I am a booklover…a bookworm.

When Kindles and other readers first came out, I had conversations with people who vowed not to even try to read with a device because they were certain they wouldn’t like it. I wasn’t sure if I could enjoy reading without all the tactile joys of a book, but I sure am glad I tried it! There are many reasons I love reading on devices: I almost always have one within reach, so I can read during any spare moments (including all those times I find myself waiting in lines). They’re lighter weight, so reading is often more comfortable (picture lying in bed while trying to hold an 850-page hardbound book like Outlander!). I can search the online store and download a book within moments of deciding which one I want to read next. I can sign up for notices when my favorite authors have new releases. You get the idea: it’s convenient!

But if you ask me whether I prefer one over the other, my answer would be electronic or printed doesn’t matter. Because nothing beats a good book!

Product/technique notes

I used patterned papers and a sticker from the Simple Life collection by Echo Park. Then I designed and cut the title on my Silhouette. The cute eyeglasses embellishment is from The Paper Studio; the yellow file tab is from Fancy Pants; the Tell my story die cut is from Shimelle; and the text paper in the scalloped border is from an American Crafts 6×6 paper pad.

The brunch bunch: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

July 1, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

The brunch bunch is a 3-photo scrapbook page based on the July 1, 2015 sketch at Stuck?! Sketches.

Today Stuck?! Sketches is revealing its first sketch challenge of July, and the design team layouts for this one are awesome. Please join us over at the blog and allow the sketch and the design team inspire you to play along. We have great sponsor prizes up for grabs.

Stuck?! Sketches July 1, 2015

These photos show my friend, Audrey (wearing pink), with the group of friends she invited to attend the May Ladies for Life brunch held by the Coalition for Life. She hosted us all and decorated the table really beautifully. It was a great way to spend a Saturday morning—surrounded by sweet women and listening to an impassioned speaker on an important topic. For added fun there was also a photo booth with a pile of crazy hats and props, so we took a bunch of kooky photos together.

Product/technique notes

If I have items in my scrapbook stash that I still like and they go with my photos, I don’t care how old they are—I’m going to use them! I’m not ashamed to admit that the papers and stickers on this layout are from the BasicGrey Euphoria collection from 2008!

One for each arm: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

June 15, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

"One for each arm" features two photos of my dad holding me and my brother when we were babies.

Today Stuck?! Sketches is revealing its mid-month sketch challenge and design team layouts. The sketch features three small photos and lots of opportunity to let your patterned papers shine:

Because it’s so close to Father’s Day, I decided to use this sketch with two photos from 1968 that show my dad as a new father of two. In the photo on the left my brother is just home from the hospital in January, and the right one was taken in the same place four months later. Look how we’ve both changed in that short time!

Product/technique notes

I used patterned papers from the Echo Park “Sisters” mini theme, and the embellishments came from an old Girls’ Paperie collection. I designed the title on the Silhouette.
