Imp

March 16, 2014 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 12 Comments

Imp_Daquila-Pardo

My title was a no-brainer, considering that imp was the first word to occur to me when I saw this photo.

This is just a photo of me at around two years old, in my pajamas, grinning for the camera. I don’t mind saying I was pretty cute!

Product/technique notes

I used the March week 2 sketch at Let’s Get Sketchy when creating this page. The papers are a mix of older American Crafts for the background and Jillibean Soup’s “Blossom Soup” collection 6×6 pad. I created the outer edge design with a Martha Stewart punch set and designed and cut the title on my Silhouette Cameo.

Updated 3/20: How cool is this? My layout was featured on the Let’s Get Sketchy site. Thank you!

We were born and raised in a summery haze

Isn't Phil adorable in his little boy glasses? And I just love my red shoes.

The 23rd sketch challenge has been posted at the SCRAP & MUSIC challenge blog! Head over to the site to grab the sketch and play along. This sketch came with the song “Someone like you” by Adele.

Scrap & Music sketch #23

My layout

I really liked the line from Adele’s song, “We were born and raised in a summery haze.” I could feel that. So I found an old photo from one of the summers of my childhood. It was July 1971; Phil was three years old and I was four. We’re posing for this photo in our driveway, dressed in the cute little outfits Mom always put on us. And we were obviously ready for anything.

Product/technique notes

Almost everything on this page is from Amy Tangerine’s “Yes, please” collection by American Crafts. I created the title in the Silhouette software and cut it on my Cameo.

The challenge

The challenges on this blog involve following the sketch and using a title on your layout with a line from the provided music. Below I’ve included the video as well as the lyrics for this song:

“Someone like you” by Adele

I heard that you’re settled down
That you found a girl and you’re married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things, I didn’t give to you

Old friend
Why are you so shy
It ain’t like you to hold back
Or hide from the light

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me, it isn’t over

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don’t forget me, I beg, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead, yeah

You’d know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summery haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me, it isn’t over yet

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don’t forget me, I beg, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead, yeah

Nothing compares, no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes they’re memories made
Who would have known how bitter-sweet this would taste

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you
Don’t forget me, I beg, I remembered you said
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don’t forget me, I beg, I remembered you said
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead, yeah, yeah

College coterie

CollegeCoterie_Daquila-Pardo

All photos taken on the beautiful Ohio University campus in Athens, Ohio, from 1985-89.

I had an absolutely wonderful group of friends during college. Most of them I made during the first quarter of my first year at Ohio University (1985/86) and remained close to throughout our four years. These guys made my college experience so much more fun (they were a funny bunch) and bearable (you know even the best college years have low points), and I love each of them. Just about every one of my college memories includes one or more of these sweet, smart, loyal friends.

  • top left: Micki McNiece, Phil Daquila, Jim Conlan (freshman year, winter quarter on Phil’s birthday)
  • top right: Teng Chek Cheong, Jim Conlan, Sandy Daquila (Mom visiting for Mother’s Weekend), Phil Daquila (senior year, spring quarter)
  • center: Joe Brown, Rich Saxby (freshman year, spring quarter as we packed up to head home for the summer)
  • bottom: Rich Ozmun, Teng Chek Cheong, Tim Schooley, Jerry Hirsch, me (senior year, spring quarter)

Product/technique notes

I followed the sketch below for my layout and will be entering it into the Page Drafts “Love is everywhere 2014 Valentines release” sketch challenge. The papers are mainly from Jillibean Soup’s “Grandma’s Lima Bean Soup” collection. I designed the title and cut that and the swirls on my Cameo. And I thought the vintage buttons were a nice touch with the quote about antiques.

New ‘do

This was taken in the driveway of our Willoughby home in October 1967.

This is just a sweet photo of me at just under a year old after having my hair cut. I look pretty happy with it, but I’m honestly not sure why!

Product/technique notes

I followed the sketch below for my layout and will be entering it into the Paper Camellia February sketch contest. The papers are all from Crate Paper’s “DIY Shop.”

You are the dancing queen

February 9, 2014 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

DancingQueen_Daquila-Pardo

Thyia was pretty much attached at the hip to her friends Shelly and Sonya all throughout high school.

The 21th sketch challenge has been posted at the SCRAP & MUSIC challenge blog! Head over to the site to grab the sketch and play along. This sketch came with the song “Dancing Queen” by ABBA.

Scrap & Music sketch #21

My layout

We are very fortunate to have many of Matt’s family photos because during his mother’s illness she asked us to take care of them (knowing about my photo preservation obsession hobby). Today’s layout features prom pictures of his younger sister, Thyia. My husband is the second of five children. Thyia was the youngest, born 10 years after Matt, so when she hit high school age he was already off to college.

This is the journaling from my page, which is rather small and may be too hard to read. I’m thankful to Thyia’s friend, Shelly, for giving me these photo details:
Thyia went to her junior prom in spring 1992 with a friend from the restaurant where she worked and her high school besties, Shelly and Sonya. They drove to Boone for dinner at Makato and before attending the dance at the Walker Center at Wilkes Community College.

Product/technique notes

I used papers from My Mind’s Eye’s “the sweetest thing » bluebell » playful” collection and created and cut the title on my Silhouette Cameo.

The challenge

The challenges on this blog involve following the sketch and using a title on your layout with a line from the provided music. Below I’ve included the video as well as the lyrics for this song:

“Dancing Queen” by ABBA

You can dance, you can jive
having the time of your life
see that girl, watch that scene
dig in the Dancing Queen
Friday night and the lights are low
looking out for the place to go
where they play the right music
getting in the swing
you come to look for a king
anybody could be that guy
night is young and the music’s high
with a bit of rock music
everything is fine
you’re in the mood for a dance
and when you get the chance
You are the Dancing Queen
young and sweet only seventeen
Dancing Queen
feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah
you can dance, you can jive
having the time of your life
see that girl, watch that scene
dig in the Dancing Queen
You’re a teaser, you turn ’em on
leave ’em burning and then you’re gone
looking out for another
anyone will do
you’re in the mood for a dance
and when you get the chance
You are the Dancing Queen
young and sweet only seventeen
Dancing Queen
feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah
you can dance, you can jive
having the time of your life
see that girl, watch that scene
dig in the Dancing Queen
