Busch Gardens 1976: Blog hop with Stuck?! Sketches & My Creative Scrapbook

September 15, 2017 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 20 Comments

Hello friends. Stuck?! Sketches has something special going on for our September 15th challenge. Along with the reveal of a new sketch challenge, and two amazing sponsors, we have loads of bonus inspiration for you, in the form of a blog hop with our generous friends at My Creative Scrapbook.

We are teaming up with My Creative Scrapbook to bring you a super fun blog hop, to share loads of inspiration from both design teams, and to give you an extra chance to win their prize. The My Creative Scrapbook design team members will be using a variety of their fabulous September kits to showcase our sketch. Each of the blog hop commenters will earn a ballot and have the opportunity to win one of My Creative Scrapbook’s gorgeous September main kits (shown below). Read on to find out how you can earn a second ballot to win this prize.

As usual, we also have a second sponsor. Thank you also to the amazing, supportive, and long-time friend to Stuck?! Sketches, Creative Embellishments, who is sponsoring this challenge with a $25.00 gift certificate to their online shop for our second randomly chosen winner.

ALSO, we want to show you how much we appreciate that you play along with us and share your designs and talent with us, so we will be choosing one scrapbooker from this challenge to guest with us for our November 15th challenge!

Of course, we still need to share our sketch with you:

The story

I still have this rocking chair. Mom and Dad tell me I loved it, and with that open-mouthed grin I’m sporting who can dispute it? Can you see how my toes are splayed with joy and excitement? And you might not be able to see it, but my tiny hands are folded into what has become a signature posture for me over the years. When I am tense or excited, I tuck my thumbs in and fold all my fingers around them. I still do it today, but I never know it until someone points it out. Some things never change.

Product/technique notes

I have had this photo in mind to use with these papers for quite a long time. I wanted to do a design that used a lot of the patterns in this older Pink Paislee collection. I was just waiting for the right inspiration to come along in the form of a sketch. Enter Laura’s October 1st sketch at Stuck?! The resin flowers are by Fancy Pants.

Stuck?! Sketches August 15, 2017

The story

For so many reasons, Phil and I were extremely fortunate to have attended college together. One of the many graces of being there for the same degree at the same time was that we knew so many of the same people. It meant a lot that we could hang out with them then, just as it means a lot that we can reminisce about them together now.

These photos are on the Ohio University campus in June 1989 after our commencement ceremony, with our friends Rich O, Phil M, and Dave K.

Product/technique notes

Most of the patterned papers on my page came from the Memorandum collection by Pink Paislee, but the pattern in the top left portion of the background is a 2009 paper from BasicGrey’s Basics White collection. I cut the feather outlines with various Silhouette store designs. The title is made up of Thickers (black) and Jillibean Soup (yellow).

Bathing beauty

Bathing beauty

The story

Mom and Dad married in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, on June 19, 1965. Then they drove to the Pocono Mountains for their honeymoon. Dad snapped this photo of his bathing beauty at the lodge pool.

Product/technique notes

I used patterns and stickers from the Echo Park Paradise Beach collection, and I cut the title on my Silhouette. I based my layout on this older Creative Scrappers sketch:

Aboard the Bobbie Lee: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

Stuck?! Sketches July 15, 2017

The story

Mom, Dad, Phil, and I took a family vacation to Virginia Beach in the summer after we graduated from college. We all wanted to try deep-sea fishing on this trip, so we made reservations on the Bobbie Lee. On the day of the excursion we arose early, went out for a big pancake breakfast, and arrived at the dock before boarding time.

The crew loaded the group onto the boat (Obviously I don’t know the technical terms used in the nautical life, so I have to stick to generic words like “dock” and “boat.”) and started the lengthy ride out to the well-known deep areas that were good for fishing. They explained the trick about watching the horizon to avoid sea sickness and entreated us to enjoy the view.

Then they set about to chopping the chum.

No amount of staring at the horizon could undo the damage inflicted by the stench of that fish bait. By the time we reached the fishing area, several people were already below deck heaving up their breakfasts, including Dad.

When one of the crew members, with whom we had talked on the journey, made his rounds to check on everyone, he noticed that one of our family was missing. He said in sing-song, “Three little Indians” and kept going.

The three of us muscled through figuring out the poles and the lines (the woman to Phil’s right in the photo tangled her line with his so badly that they had to be cut loose from each other) and tried to enjoy fishing while nauseated. Finally, Mom caved and went inside to join Dad for ginger ale and crackers. Soon after, our taunting crewman came by and sang, “Two little Indians.” I was starting to get miffed.

Once Phil also gave in to the sickness and left me to fish alone, the smug crew member came around the bend, smiled broadly when he saw that only I was left, and sang “One little Indian.” He winked and was gone. I decided on the spot that I could not give in to how bad I felt. I had to represent for the Daquila family.

I stood strong and finished out the excursion on deck and without giving in to the sea sickness. And I remain quite proud of that fact. But oh, I paid for it for the rest of the day. We went back to the hotel room, cleaned up, and napped. And when it was time for dinner, Mom, Dad, and Phil felt great. Fit as fiddles. Ready to eat. I, on the other hand, was still miserable.

Normally, I am a firm believer in standing strong. But in hindsight, there are times in life when you should probably just “cut bait.”

Product/technique notes

Everything on my page came from the Quoted collection by We R Memory Keepers. I designed and cut the title on my Silhouette.
