A cut above: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

The story

My paternal grandfather spent 77 years as a barber. So, of course, he cut all 12 of the grandchildren’s hair when we were little. My cousin, Mike, is in the barber’s chair in Papa’s shop in this darling 1966 photo.

Product/technique notes

I used patterned papers from Pink Paislee’s Pen Pals collection for this page, mostly because of the red-, white- and blue-striped paper that reminded me of a barber’s pole. I also used my Silhouette to create the barber’s pole and the title.

I was fortunate to spend four years earning my undergraduate degree at Ohio University in the 1980s. I don’t think there’s a way to work as hard as you have to when you’re taking a full load and holding down a job without having some difficult days. And I did. But mostly I loved my time there. I learned valuable stuff 😉 from some wonderful professors, made great friends, and matured from my experiences of being away from home.

And there was always one constant, on the good days and the bad: The beautiful campus made things better. On a day when I felt on top of the world and everything was going right, my gorgeous surroundings made me feel higher. And on a day when I hadn’t had enough sleep, was heading to an exam I knew I could never feel ready for, and was down in the dumps, being on that beautiful campus soothed my soul and lifted my spirits.

On this spring day in 1987, I’m posing with the cherry trees on the College Green, where the oldest administrative and classroom buildings are. It’s where the university started, and it’s where I felt at home away from home.

Product/technique notes

I used patterned paper from the Pebbles Garden Party collection. The title is made with Thickers alphas and a die cut from Shimmele. The bicycle sticker is from the Simple Stories Hugs & Kisses collection. The resin flower is from Fancy Pants.

This Easter 1971 pic is from a series of photos my dad took of the family in our back yard after returning from Easter Sunday mass. Phil and I were 3 and 4 years old. Can you get over the cuteness of our Easter wear?

The background papers and chipboard frames I used are from Crate Paper, and the patterned papers inside the frames are by BasicGrey. The title comes from the 1949 song best known as recorded by Gene Autry.

In 1970 the Easter Bunny found clever hiding places for our enormous baskets full of goodies right inside our home! And we cleverly sussed out where they were. Score! Thanks, EB.

I used patterned paper and stickers from Echo Park’s Springtime collection and designed the title with my Silhouette Cameo.

1968 bridesmaids

My parents met in college while they were studying to become teachers. Before they were really even dating (but my dad already knew he loved my mom), they found their first teaching jobs in the same school system. When they attended their orientation session for new teachers in the Painesville Township school system they met Mary Ann. She and Mom became friends, and these August 1968 photos are from when Mom served as a bridesmaid in Mary Ann’s wedding.

I love the colors and clothing and hair styles in these photos. The top one is from the rehearsal dinner (Mom is fourth from the left), and the bottom one is during the receiving line after the ceremony (Mom is third from the left).

Product/technique notes

Although I didn’t get this page finished in time to enter her challenge, I really liked this sketch by Heather Leopard. I was happy to be able to use some older supplies from my stash for this page: the patterned paper is from the American Crafts Letterbox collection (2009), the flowers are from Prima (2010), and the rub ons are by Marcella for K&Co (really old). I designed and cut the title on my Silhouette.
