Why we are vegetarians

October 1, 2012 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

Vegetarians_Daquila-Pardo

For World Vegetarian Day I decided to sit down and document why my husband and I returned to a vegetarian lifestyle last October.

When I found out that today is World Vegetarian Day, I decided that the best way to recognize it would be to do a layout about why Matt and I have become vegetarians.

We actually tried a vegetarian lifestyle several years ago, but we didn’t do enough learning about how to do it well. We replaced way too many of our meat-centric meals with carbs because they’re so easy. But because of that we gained weight, which certainly didn’t improve our health, which was the original reason for starting the change in diet. So we eventually gave it up.

Then, last October, as Matt was getting more into running and losing weight, he began to read more and more about the benefits to an athlete of being vegetarian. So we decided to try again, but this time we did more homework and it’s been a much more satisfying change.

The rest of the reasons for being vegetarian apply to us as well. It started to become harder for us to be passionate animal rescuers and not question our continued willingness to eat meat. We also believe that it’s better for the environment not to allot so much of our land to raising cattle, etc.

There’s a ton of information out there that can convince you to give up meat if you’re interested, but my real reason for doing this layout was to document in our scrapbook album this part of our lives and why it’s important to us.

The journaling

Back when I first saw these bags from Chipotle Mexican Grill, I really wanted to recreate the look with the journaling on one of my layouts. Then, when I thought about doing this page, that idea came back to me. The organic feel of it seemed like the perfect fit for my “granola” message, so I hand-lettered my journaling in the same style.

Product/technique notes: I found the amazing photo I used on my page on the Mercy for Animals blog. The patterned paper is from the BasicGrey Konnichiwa collection.

Tim Holtz Distress Markers 5-pack color lists

September 27, 2012 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 74 Comments

When the Tim Holtz Distress Markers by Ranger came out months back, I loved the idea. But rather than buying the whole set before even getting to try out one marker, I decided to look for ways to buy them in smaller chunks. So, when I started seeing 5-packs of these markers at Hobby Lobby and Michaels I excitedly bought them (with coupons, of course).

But I quickly became distressed (pun fully intended) at the lack of information on the product packaging. Some of the sets had names—such as Memories Past and Country Fair—but these were only printed on the store SKU tag and not the bubble pack, and not all of them even had names. Kind of weird.

But the bigger problem was that the color names of the included markers weren’t listed anywhere! It wasn’t printed on the cardboard backing. And the way the markers were packed in the plastic made it so that only one marker was turned up and readable.

Then, when I came home to look for the list online I still couldn’t find any details! The reason I was so diligent about finding this info is that I wanted to be sure, before opening the product and making it harder to return, that none of the sets had duplicate colors.

Well, I finally decided, after comparing all the sets and figuring that there didn’t look to be any color overlap, that I would just open them. It worked out because I now have 25 of the colors and I like the markers. But my frustration over not finding these colors listed anywhere turned into a little project to benefit my readers. And so I give you…

The Distress Markers 5-pack color lists:

TimHoltzDistressMarkersClutteredCellar

Cluttered Cellar includes: stormy sky, forest moss, fired brick, spiced marmalade and dusty concord

TimHoltzDistressMarkersCountryFair

Country Fair includes: peeled paint, barn door, mustard, faded jeans and black soot

TimHoltzDistressMarkersEstateSale

Estate Sale includes: frayed burlap, weathered wood, shabby shutters, tattered rose and Victorian velvet

TimHoltzDistressMarkersMemoriesPast

Memories Past includes: vintage photo, wild honey, crushed olive, tumbled glass and worn lipstick

TimHoltzDistressMarkersVictorianShabby

Victorian Shabby includes: antique linen, broken china, bundled sage, spun sugar and picket fence

I really hope this is helpful to you. If you have found any other color collections of these markers, will you please leave me a comment to tell me the name of it and which colors are included?

Update

I’ve received a helpful update from reader Monica, who says there is another 5-piece set called Hillside, which has the following colors:
Aged Mahogany
Dusty Concord (also in Cluttered Cellar)
Pine Needle
Spiced Marmalade (also in Cluttered Cellar)
Walnut Stain

It sounds like Ranger isn’t going to make it easy for us to collect all the distress markers through sets, which is unfortunate because I think it makes them seem less customer friendly. It seems like a marketing ploy to force us to buy duplicates just so we can take advantage of the better pricing that bundles afford. Do you think you will buy the “Hillside” set even if you already have the others, or are the duplicates going to keep you from making the purchase?

Update #2 (2014)

Tim Holtz Distress Markers now total 49 colors (the original full set included 37 colors). The new colors are available as a 12-color set (in their own 2-inch storage tube) for those who bought the original full set and want to update to the new full set). You can also buy the whole updated 49-color set (in 4-inch storage tube). Or you can buy individual colors as open stock.

The colors included in the 12-marker seasonal set are:
Evergreen Bough
Festive Berries
Gathered Twigs
Iced Spruce
Mowed Lawn
Peacock Feathers
Picked Raspberry
Ripe Persimmon
Salty Ocean
Seedless Preserves
Shaded Lilac
Squeezed Lemonade

There are more sets to add to your watch list:
Boardwalk:
Evergreen Bough
Shaded Lilac
Salty Ocean
Festive Berries
Squeezed Lemonade

Marketplace:
Mowed Lawn
Peacock Feathers
Picked Raspberry
Ripe Persimmon
Seedless Preserves

Update #3 (2015)

Thank you to reader Katie, who left a helpful comment about finding the 12-piece tube with all the 2015 monthly releases at Hobby Lobby:
Mermaid Lagoon
Hickory Smoke
Cracked Pistachio
Blueprint Sketch
Twisted Citron
Abandoned Coral
Wilted Violet

Best sandwich ever

You must do yourself a favor and try this sandwich.

So, they tell me it’s autumn now. Well, that’s awesome, but in Texas the beginning of autumn still usually feels a lot like summer everywhere else. And because the ingredients for our favorite summer sandwich are still in season, I thought I would let summer dangle its toes over the line a wee bit into fall by letting you in on this taste sensation secret…via a scrapbook layout, of course!

If you like these ingredients on their own, you are going to LOVE the flavor combination they create together. Don’t say I didn’t warn you if every time you see avocados at the market, you instantly think of these bad boys.

The recipe
Toast bread and spread with mayo.
Pile with sliced avocado, tomato, red onion, cilantro and/or basil and jalapeño (it’s wonderful without the pepper, too, but we like the added spice).
Add salt and pepper to taste.

That’s all there is to it.

This sandwich is absolutely wonderful on its own, but we think that having it with corn on the cob takes it to a whole different flavor level. It’s what I imagine summer would taste like if we could take a bite!

Product/technique notes:
The colors of the BasicGrey Indie Bloom line were perfect for my photos. I also used a sketch they provided on their blog:

So happy together

Enjoying Tuesdays on the Patio at Weathervane at Southern Season with Phil and Mom, July 31, 2012.

I took a trip home to North Carolina in late July/early August to visit my mom and bro. This photo is just a nice one from our first full day together, after we had enjoyed a good meal, local wines and live music on the back patio of Weathervane restaurant at Southern Season in Chapel Hill.

Product/technique notes:
I used patterned papers from BasicGrey (the heart paper is from the Olivia collection), Fancy Pants (the background text) and My Mind’s Eye (everything else). I created the title (my own design) and the flowers (from Silhouette) using the Silhouette cutting machine, and I followed sketch #225 from Creative Scrappers:

We have a winner!

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog this week for the Creative Scrappers blog hop. Out of all the sweet comments that were left, Nancy’s was the winning message. Congratulations, Nancy! You have won a copy of the Creative Scrappers Creating with Sketches book. I will be sending you an email soon about this.

And now, here is my latest layout:

OhSnap2_Daquila-Pardo

We were having ice cream at Dairy Queen when we "took" these photos.

The funny little story that this page documents happened in July. When Matt and I went to Dairy Queen one weekend, I took along our new little point-and-shoot camera. I asked Matt to pose with me for a quick self-portrait before we started eating. We smiled and I took the photo. Then, while I was still holding the camera, it started clicking off more rapid-fire shots, even though my finger was no longer on the shutter release button! It took a few shots before I could figure out what was happening.

Well, earlier that day I had been fiddling with the camera settings and then promptly forgotten that one of the selections I made was for something called “smile detection” (whatever that was). We figured it out pretty quickly because every time we laughed at what was happening, it snapped more photos.

It was just a funny little moment…but worth recording (especially since we had so many photos of it!).
