Bloom & grow: DT layout for Stuck?! Sketches

September 15, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

Bloom & grow

Today Stuck?! Sketches launches our second challenge of our anniversary month! Grab the sketch and play along for lots of prize opportunities.

Stuck?! Sketches September 15, 2016 sketch

The story

My husband’s mom was raising her family of five (aged 3-14) in Detroit in the 1970s. Sick of the poverty and danger surrounding them, she decided that she wanted to give them a better life. So she packed up their belongings and started driving toward Atlanta.

While traveling through the mountains of North Carolina, they stopped at a campground to stay the night. But when they arose the next morning, their car wouldn’t start. Matt clearly remembers living out of their car for a couple of weeks while their mom found a waitressing job so she could make the money to have the car fixed.

While all this was happening, she fell in love with the area and decided not to move on to Georgia after all! Instead, she bought a house in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains and stayed there quite happily for the rest of her life.

In these circa 1979 photos, she and the kids were planting their first round of tomatoes in their new yard.

Product/technique notes

The patterned papers are from the Simple Stories Bloom and Grow collection. I designed and cut the title on my Silhouette.

Stuck?! Sketches & Clique Kits blog hop
Thank you to Clique Kits for sending our team members a September kit to use for the projects in this hop.

I just couldn’t help myself when I saw that dream catcher design on one of the KaiserCraft Boho Dreams papers in the kit. I thought of my mother-in-law, who loved dream catchers, so I had to use it to document this 70s-style selfie she took in a vehicle’s side mirror. I used colored pencils and fussy cut it to make it the centerpiece of my page. In addition to all the CK kit supplies, I also used flair (just to the right of my photo) from another of our sponsors, Accent Scrapbooking.

Live your dreams

Here is a reminder of our sketch:

Bicycle built for two

September 9, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

Bicycle built for two

I have lovely memories of Mom teaching us classic children’s songs while swinging on our back yard swing set. We learned songs such as Frere Jacques, I’m a Little Teapot, Home on the Range, Oh Susanna, and A Bicycle Built for Two (and many more). Good times.

When it came time for Phil and me to dream up a gift idea for our parents’ 25th anniversary, we decided to go for charming and romantic and bought them this bicycle built for two. We were so excited to give them a gift straight from our childhood memories!

Product/technique notes

I designed a template for the sunburst and cut it with my Cameo, then traced and hand cut each pattern based on the template pieces. The patterned papers are from the Adorn It Wildflowers collection. The couple on the bicycle came from the Silhouette store.

In case you can’t tell from the image of the layout, I wrote the lyrics to the song all the way around the edge of their photo.

Move-in day

August 30, 2016 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 6 Comments

Move-in day

We got married in October 1997 and bought our first home in August 1998. At the very same time, Mom and Dad decided to move to a different neighborhood within the same town. We ended up buying our houses within a mile of each other, and I think we even moved in within the same week. What an exciting and tiring time!

In this photo, Matt’s older brother, Tom, is helping us unload more stuff at our new house. My brother, Phil, was also helping and probably took this shot.

Product/technique notes

I followed the Creative Scrappers sketch below and used patterned papers from Pink Paislee’s Hometown Summer 6×6 pack and October Afternoon’s Campire 8×8 pad. They’re both older collections, and I love how well they worked together. I created the background grid of pinked-edged circles and cut it on my Silhouette.
