Write. Click. Scrapbook.

October 5, 2012 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 1 Comment

I am so excited and honored today because I am one of two designers being featured on Write. Click. Scrapbook. as part of their Talent Abounds Week! If you are visiting me from the WCS site, I am so pleased to have you here.

I thought that seeing as my WCS post is about my love for scrapbooking with sketches, I would create a sketch for you to download and a sample layout based on it. Because I often design pages with vintage photos from my childhood, and my parents—as so many people did with film cameras—took only a few photos of most events, I find myself needing a lot of one- or two-photo sketches. So I designed this one-photo sketch to work with.

The truth is that yesterday was our 15th anniversary, so I wanted to scrap one of our wedding photos and thought that a double-wedding-ring-quilt look would be great to try. Here is the sketch:

If you use this sketch I would love to see your layout!

And here is my layout:

The colors in the BasicGrey Plumeria patterned papers were perfect because of how they went with my bouquet.

I also created the cut file for the quilt element so that I could cut it out on my Silhouette. If you have a Silhouette and would like to try this file, just leave me a comment asking for it (be sure to include your email address) and I will send it to you.

I want to thank Write. Click. Srapbook. again for this wonderful opportunity to appear on their blog today. I have so much respect for their designers and writers and really find great inspiration there. And thank you for visiting my blog today. I do hope you’ll leave me a quick message to let me know you were here and I hope you’ll come back again. 🙂

Why we are vegetarians

October 1, 2012 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

Vegetarians_Daquila-Pardo

For World Vegetarian Day I decided to sit down and document why my husband and I returned to a vegetarian lifestyle last October.

When I found out that today is World Vegetarian Day, I decided that the best way to recognize it would be to do a layout about why Matt and I have become vegetarians.

We actually tried a vegetarian lifestyle several years ago, but we didn’t do enough learning about how to do it well. We replaced way too many of our meat-centric meals with carbs because they’re so easy. But because of that we gained weight, which certainly didn’t improve our health, which was the original reason for starting the change in diet. So we eventually gave it up.

Then, last October, as Matt was getting more into running and losing weight, he began to read more and more about the benefits to an athlete of being vegetarian. So we decided to try again, but this time we did more homework and it’s been a much more satisfying change.

The rest of the reasons for being vegetarian apply to us as well. It started to become harder for us to be passionate animal rescuers and not question our continued willingness to eat meat. We also believe that it’s better for the environment not to allot so much of our land to raising cattle, etc.

There’s a ton of information out there that can convince you to give up meat if you’re interested, but my real reason for doing this layout was to document in our scrapbook album this part of our lives and why it’s important to us.

The journaling

Back when I first saw these bags from Chipotle Mexican Grill, I really wanted to recreate the look with the journaling on one of my layouts. Then, when I thought about doing this page, that idea came back to me. The organic feel of it seemed like the perfect fit for my “granola” message, so I hand-lettered my journaling in the same style.

Product/technique notes: I found the amazing photo I used on my page on the Mercy for Animals blog. The patterned paper is from the BasicGrey Konnichiwa collection.

Best sandwich ever

You must do yourself a favor and try this sandwich.

So, they tell me it’s autumn now. Well, that’s awesome, but in Texas the beginning of autumn still usually feels a lot like summer everywhere else. And because the ingredients for our favorite summer sandwich are still in season, I thought I would let summer dangle its toes over the line a wee bit into fall by letting you in on this taste sensation secret…via a scrapbook layout, of course!

If you like these ingredients on their own, you are going to LOVE the flavor combination they create together. Don’t say I didn’t warn you if every time you see avocados at the market, you instantly think of these bad boys.

The recipe
Toast bread and spread with mayo.
Pile with sliced avocado, tomato, red onion, cilantro and/or basil and jalapeño (it’s wonderful without the pepper, too, but we like the added spice).
Add salt and pepper to taste.

That’s all there is to it.

This sandwich is absolutely wonderful on its own, but we think that having it with corn on the cob takes it to a whole different flavor level. It’s what I imagine summer would taste like if we could take a bite!

Product/technique notes:
The colors of the BasicGrey Indie Bloom line were perfect for my photos. I also used a sketch they provided on their blog:

So happy together

Enjoying Tuesdays on the Patio at Weathervane at Southern Season with Phil and Mom, July 31, 2012.

I took a trip home to North Carolina in late July/early August to visit my mom and bro. This photo is just a nice one from our first full day together, after we had enjoyed a good meal, local wines and live music on the back patio of Weathervane restaurant at Southern Season in Chapel Hill.

Product/technique notes:
I used patterned papers from BasicGrey (the heart paper is from the Olivia collection), Fancy Pants (the background text) and My Mind’s Eye (everything else). I created the title (my own design) and the flowers (from Silhouette) using the Silhouette cutting machine, and I followed sketch #225 from Creative Scrappers:

Knave training

I am a total newbie to Renaissance festivals. It was such an interesting culture!

We spent a beautiful spring Sunday afternoon immersing ourselves in the sights and sounds of Sherwood Forest Faire, a Renaissance festival in McDade, Texas. We watched a jousting match and a magic show, threw axes and shot with a bow and arrows (my favorite!). Matt grew up attending Ren fests, but I didn’t, so this was all new to me. It was such an interesting culture! Everyone who worked the event was decked out in period wear, which I expected. But many of the attendees had even better costumes! It was a fun day.

Product/technique notes:
I used this fun sketch from Crafty Sketches:

The papers I used for the flags are from BasicGrey’s Oxford collection.
