Dirt castles

Dirt castles

The story

My husband lived in Michigan until the age of 12, when his mom moved the family to the mountains of North Carolina. In these photos, circa 1979, Matt is building and populating dirt castles in their new (huge) front yard in NC. What a cutie!

Product/technique notes

I created this page for the “This or That” Paper Issues spring crop challenge. This required the use of one or the other, but not both of each pair below:
1. all cardstock or all patterned paper; 2. 4 of the same size circle or 4 of the same size rectangles; 3. silver or gold; 4. hand journaling or typed journaling; 5. enamels or flair, 6. ephemera or chipboard; 7. ribbon or twine; 8. matted photo or frame; 9. 3 photos or 2 photos; 10. sun or camera

I used papers from Bo Bunny, Jillibean Soup, and DCWV and created the title on my Silhouette.

Who rescued whom?

February 27, 2015 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

WhoRescuedWhom_Daquila-Pardo

We rescued our beloved Oliver from a busy highway in 2002. He was a tiny kitten and sorely needed our help. But ever since whisking him out of harm’s way and bringing him home to live with us, we are the ones who have needed him. He has made us more loving people and brought us such great joy. Apparently, Oliver Longfellow Daquila-Pardo, you have rescued us.

Product/technique notes

All the Bo Bunny “Star-Crossed” products I used to create this layout came from the Back Porch Memories February kit (thank you to BPM for allowing me to be a part of their design team through March). I designed the title and cut it with my Silhouette Cameo and hand stitched across the two pages to mimic the stitching and banners on the journaling card.

Note: I’m submitting this to the Paper Issues “Prints Charming Beautiful Papers” link party.

Love you beyond the stars

BeyondTheStars_Daquila-Pardo

Although love is big on all our minds in February anyway, I started thinking about the fact that because Matt and I originally met in February that gives us another great reason to celebrate love and life in addition to Valentine’s Day.

My journaling reads: “Some days creep up on you and change your life. Monday, February 5, 1996, was such a day for me. It’s almost more than I can get my head around how much life began to shift once Matt breezed into my office at UNC-CH’s Manning Hall that morning. Can that really have been 19 years ago?”

Product/technique notes

This clean and simple page came together so quickly, as it uses both sides of one piece of patterned paper (the stars at the top and the polka dots with heart embellishment at the bottom) plus a 6×4 card cut from another piece from that collection. Pop it all on a contrasting card stock background, add a pre-made chipboard frame for the title and you have a sweet page about love. All the Bo Bunny “Star-Crossed” products I used to create this layout came from the Back Porch Memories February kit (thank you to BPM for allowing me to be a part of their design team through March).

One step closer

Matt is jumping over the fire obstacle as he gets one step closer to the finish line in his second Spartan Race.

The eighth sketch challenge has been posted at the SCRAP & MUSIC challenge blog! Head over to the site to grab the sketch and play along. This eighth sketch came with the song “A thousand years” by Christina Perri.

Scrap & Music sketch #8

My layout

In May my husband, Matt, participated in his second Spartan race, a 5-mile run sprinkled heavily with obstacles. It was actually his idea to use this photo of him jumping over the fire obstacle to go with the words to this ultra-romantic song from the Twilight: Breaking Dawn movies. He’s a true romantic!

Product/technique notes

The patterned papers I used on this layout are from the Bo Bunny “Trail mix” collection. I designed and cut my title using the Silhouette Cameo and also cut the arrow and barbed wire borders on the Cameo. I added some hand stitching around the edge of the circles to make them stand out more.

The challenge

The challenges on this blog involve following the sketch and using a title on your layout with a line from the provided music. Below I’ve included the video as well as the lyrics for this song:

“A thousand years” by Christina Perri
Heart beats fast
Colors and promises
How to be brave
How can I love when I’m afraid to fall
But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow

One step closer

I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling don’t be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

Time stands still
Beauty in all she is
I will be brave
I will not let anything take away
What’s standing in front of me
Every breath
Every hour has come to this

One step closer

I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling don’t be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

One step closer
One step closer

I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling don’t be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more
