Old school

February 15, 2012 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

Twisted Sketches has revealed sketch #139, and the twist is “old.” Be sure to head over to the site to grab the sketch and see all the other design team members’ beautiful examples. Then create something of your own and link it up!

Here is what I created using this great new sketch:

OldSchool_Daquila-Pardo

I saw this Hot Date collection by KI Memories and immediately wanted to use it to do a layout about my love of fountain pens.

Do you ever create a layout because a certain patterned paper triggers something in your brain? The background paper on my page above was the inspiration for this whole idea. It’s from a Valentine-themed collection called Hot Date by KI Memories, and as soon as I saw the little fountain pens in the design I was committed to creating an ode to fountain pens (mine in particular).

I have loved fountain pens for a very long time. Daddy had a few old ones in his valet tray on the chest of drawers in the bedroom, and I loved to take those out and turn them over in my fingers. They were made of various colored pearl laminates and had lever fillers. They fascinated me with their beauty and old-world functionality. What?! You use the lever to suction special ink into a bladder inside the pen before you can write with it? How could I think that was anything but awesome when all we ever used at school were Bic ballpoint stick pens?

So I carried my love for fountain pens into my adulthood. I even bought a few inexpensive vintage pens at flea markets, but they didn’t work very well. Then one day, in my very first job out of college, my office mate brought a rubber stamp catalog (from Rubba Dub Dub) to work and asked if I wanted to order anything from it. I pored over that book for a long time, loving the idea of rubber stamps but having no concept of how I would use them. But there was a beautiful vintage fountain pen image that won me over. It seemed so expensive to me at the time, but I had visions of using it to create my own stationery, so I bought it.

Fast forward a number of years, and I must have let slip to my new husband how much I loved fountain pens because for one of our first Christmases together (1999) he gave me a gorgeous Mont Blanc. It’s a special edition pen called Hommage à Fédéric Chopin, and it includes a CD of Chopin’s music. I adore writing with it. It feels like you really mean what you’re saying when you write it with this beauty.

As I say in my journaling: I love technology, but old school is so cool.

Winter greetings to warm your heart

December 2, 2011 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 2 Comments

I’m happy to report that I made good headway on my Christmas cards last night! I fired up the Swinging Christmas tunes on Pandora and got crafty. The plan is to hunker down this evening and finish the whole lot of them. Please wish me luck!

In the meantime and in between time, here is a little seasonal card I made the other day. I was feeling the need to color, so I pulled out these darling stamps by Stampendous and my Copics, and this is how it all came together:

WinterGreetings_Daquila-Pardo

Aren't these characters from Stampendous just adorable?

It’s cold and raining here in Austin, so I’m a happy holiday girl. Having grown up in Ohio, I have certain cold and snow requirements for it to truly feel like it’s time to engage in Christmas activities. So I’m thrilled to be looking forward to a cold weekend that will include Christmas crafting and carol singing at our downtown tree lighting! I hope your Friday is great and your weekend is greater. 😉

Young Crafters Unite! Masculine Cards Blog Hop

Welcome to my stop on the blog hop! If you came from Paulina Nakamura’s site—
Pretty Pink Posh
—you’re in the right place. Or if you just jumped into the hop you can see the whole list of participants and explanation of prizes at the Young Crafters Unite! site.

Here’s my contribution:

YouSendMe_Daquila-Pardo

I made this card to look like a package being sent through the mail.

I wanted to make this card look like a package wrapped in brown paper and covered in stamps to be sent through the mail. I really enjoyed the process of making it:

  • I started with a piece of kraft cardstock 9 x 7.5 inches, which I scored and folded to make a 9 x 3.75-inch card.
  • I chose a Silhouette cut file in the shape of a sheet of stamps and cut two sets. I left one intact and cut out the centers from the other set.
  • Using a different Tim Holtz Distress Ink on each stamp, I colored in all the backgrounds.
  • Then I used the same distress inks and stamped different background designs on each.
  • I chose stamp designs that were either travel or mail themed and used black ink to stamp one design on each.
  • To give the stamps a little shine I spritzed them with Glimmer Mist in gold.
  • Then I glued the white edges on top of the colored stamps.
  • After mounting the stamps on dimensional adhesive, I tied twine around my “package” and stamped the sentiment.

The next card maker on the hop is JESSI FOGAN—One Crafty Mama. Her cards are just stunning.

I am also entering this card in the masculine card challenge (#3):

Young Crafters Unite! Challenge #3

Please be sure to leave comments at each blog; we love to hear your feedback and it enters your name for chances to win prizes. 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting me today, and have a wonderful Friday!

Eat, drink & be scary

Celebrate Blogtoberfest with me all month!

Blogtoberfest Day 28

Don’t miss out on my GIVEAWAY (closes 12:00 midnight EST on Sunday, October 30th)!

Today, in honor of Halloween, I decided to challenge myself by doing something that I find scary. I pulled out an art supply that I bought years ago but have never used! I’ve had a set of Perfect Pearls in my stash for quite a while, but because I’ve been a little intimidated by them they’ve remained in the drawer.

But today I stamped the skull on the card below with watermark ink and dusted on the Perfect Pearls according to the directions. And the results are beautiful (although it’s very hard to photograph the luster).

Now that I’ve tried them, I honestly don’t know why I thought they would be difficult to use. There was nothing to it! So, I challenge you to buck up and try something that you’ve thought was intimidating. Face your fears. 😉 {Cue wolf howling.}

So grateful for rain

October 19, 2011 By Janice Daquila-Pardo 5 Comments

Celebrate Blogtoberfest with me all month!

Blogtoberfest Day 19

The layout I’m sharing today is based on a sketch provided at sketch challenge site, Sketchy Thursdays. This challenge is open until Saturday, October 22nd, so you can still play along! In addition to following the provided sketch, we had to journal about what we’re thankful for and include at least five leaves on the page (as a photo, patterned paper, stamps, die cuts, etc.).

GratefulForRain_Daquila-Pardo

After 13 months of drought, the rain we had last week was a blessing.

The sketch and the journaling prompt worked together so well for me this time. I immediately thought of how thankful I was for our recent rainstorms. And with that thought in mind, the sketch stopped looking like strips of patterned paper to me and more like raindrops falling down the page. The journaling reads, “I am thankful daily for my family, my love, my health, my God and my home. But after 13 months of drought in Austin, I am particularly grateful for RAIN.”

The background paper I chose represents the parched earth that surrounds us. The patterned paper “raindrops” reflect the colors in the photo of the leaves in the puddle. And a little Glossy Accents on the word RAIN in the title reflects the blessed moisture. We certainly didn’t get enough rain to pull us out of our drought, but we’ll take every drop with gratitude.
